Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

Neither does Intel, so we're in good company.

One of the languages I was taught at university was Occam. It was fundamentally unsuited to game development.
Oh dear lord, don't remind me... Don't suppose you went to the University of Bristol, did you 😄
I'm fairly sure the reason we got taught it was because David May (who designed the damn thing) still worked for the uni. I hear they've finally moved on from it in more recent years...

Anyhow, where's this roadmap? And can it be described as a set of communicating sequential processes...

Nope, Salford University in my 2nd year which was 91-92 so it was approximately current. I remember very little about it except 1) it had a horribly obtuse editor and 2) getting any time on our lab's transputer array was virtually impossible.

I didn't do too well in that module, rather unsurprisingly!

Surprised to find another victimveteran....

Communicating? No
Sequential? No.
Processes? Hell no.

I mean, the human brain is good at seeing patterns, and if you look at that image, and take away the line that is drawn, you could draw other lines following those contours and say they were roads as well.
It bother you so much that CIG works on road brush maps for it's planetary tech ?

I have much trouble finding a pig here

It bothers you so much that there is nothing to show that CI¬G has worked on it other than the unsubstantiated wishful thinking borne out of same pattern recognition that creates shapes out of nothing?

You presumably also have much trouble finding a road.

Not at all. Its not exactly groundbreaking technology. I just find it funny when people have wishful thinking over something that isn't even there. But there again, that pretty much sums up the relationship of faithful backers with CIG. :p

PS: Would you like to buy my JPG of the pig shaped cloud? I'll cut you a deal. $1000! Warbond only!

No, it's rather that it's unfinished and left unfinished as a scar in the world. I know, I know "hiz alpher" - But I think there is a good chance it will just stay there for ever. Or until the whole planet gets refactored. Backer funds must be consumed somehow after all.
My post was just about the fact that the planetary tech had a wip (at least) dirt roads brush tool.
With the new heightmap released in 3.10 and if they're not planning on changing it again, chances are we're gonna see some dirt roads popping up.

The problem is that that's not a fact. It's just an assumption illustrated by a couple of lines based on work that was supposedly started three years ago, which when it comes from CI¬G is about as weak a foundation as it gets for basing your assumptions on.

Has it ever been mentioned since?
Has it even been demonstrated since?
Has it ever been included in any release blurb or shown off in a “look at this fancy patch”-ad since?
Has anyone actually found any roads using it since?

My point is, brush tool or not, that doesn't look any differnt to any of the other contour lines all over the place on those images you posted. You could draw a line for a "road" over any of them and say it was a road.

Also, embiggening a brush tool in 3D modelling, something that has existed for decades, is not something CIG (or backers) really need to be shouting about. It just makes them look desperate to show off anything at all to make it look like there is some sort of progress.

Now if CIG were to actually do something that hadn't been done before (and not just reinventing the wheel) then it might be worthy of some praise. Still waiting for that to happen though after 8 years, as they only things they have really excelled at over the years is misleading backers and squeezing money out of them.

Sorry for quoting myself here, but just want to drive this point home.

I'm not a 3D modeller at all. I've got some basic experience, largely gained through helping my son learn about 3D modelling and some past experience years ago on the Amiga and on Spark Workstations at uni.

But i could go into my son's room, load up Blender. Make a sphere, mess with the bumps on it, and use a brush tool to draw "roads" on it.

If i did that, would anyone proclaim my work as some sort achievement?

But but but, Star Citizen has a terrain brush tool! Getting desperate?

If you did that — especially on the Amiga — you've been doing for far longer, and using much more complex tools, than the “senior” developers CI¬G have padded their numbers with recently. :p

Well, i did once make a sphere and wrapped an earth texture around it and then rotated it with a "sun" lightsource. Took about 5 minutes to render each frame. Left that damn thing running overnight just to make it rotate once.

Perhaps CIG should hire me!
