This is crazy talk

On Bog's return to SC this week.

I feel sad for him. He hates the game, and loves the game. It was so bad he gave up on it, ranted on Spectrum, looks genuinely upset at times trying to play it.

But I'm also disappointed in him. When he returns this week and starts going through all the citcon videos he missed, hes asked by someone in chat if they should buy it, and he goes into the usual spiel about how he loves it so much and yes you can buy it for $40 and then buy everything else in game etc etc etc, bdsse.

Sigh.

Much ouch...

I feel really old sometimes, this is one of them. Next week is my 10 year mark, but I'm about to turn 60 and looking down the road to retirement. My buddies and I played the original Wing Commander and Privateer games when they came out (the death of Spirit in WC2 still hurts...), so when Chris announced he was looking at maybe making a new game we threw money into it right away.

We poked at it like you did, walking around the hanger, trying to figure out what we could interact with - sometimes badly. We all bought the Rear Admiral package as well. But then it would be put aside and forgotten until a new major announcement, and I'd jump in just to have a look. The first time I could actually take a ship out felt great.

Unfortunately, of the original four of us, two have since died, one quite recently. The third hasn't been in the game in maybe 8 years, and is still kind of bitter about the experience. I've been playing full time (like several hours a day) for about 6 months, although I've been in and out for a few years.

I've put about $350 into the game since the original kickstarter, and don't regret a single cent. I just wish my old buds were enjoying it with me.

I'm in the same boat, but it was early September for me. I was one of the first 4000 people in the world to back SC. When i first saw it, the promise of it, i thought it would have ushered in the second golden-age of PC gaming, so i too backed early and big.

I don't want to be negative about the game, but I'm just sad at this point. The hope of the game i actually backed releasing while I'm still able to play to a good standard is rapidly fading and all the friends and clan mates who shared the same hope now are either ambivalent or see it as a meme or are just downright gone.

I used to be excited to stay up and watch CitizenCon, Wingman and the rest, i was present at the very first one with white shirt guy, but now i can't even muster a "meh". I didn't even bother watching this last Citcon, because there was literally nothing of value in it.

I should have seen it coming when the bandwagon started to get a little too big, and once the Euro hyper-sim crowd started to control the narrative i knew the bloat was going to be endless and we would likely never see the game that we originally backed for.

Maybe I'll sell my account, the golden ticket and low backer number might fetch a decent amount from a collector, as well as the original LTI packages, it would break my heart to do it, but 10 years is a very long time to just load in, fall through an elevator, die and then crash your computer.

I really, really want CIG and SC to succeed, perhaps one day I'll turn around and see everyone cheering the headline and it'll pull me back in.
