Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

Derek Smart was right, but commandos are realising it only in the second decade of development.

The idea is right, but his interpretation is wrong: the speed is not the problem (at constant speed, it's like no one is moving) but the acceleration. Even if there's a big difference in speeds between 2 objects you can very easily predict their future position with a simple algorithm (even a linear interpolation(*) could be enough in most cases for space ships).

But random accelerations in any direction: that's where you lose the prediction algorithm and why you get desync. "Strafe" move accelerations in SC are insane and do not even reflect the ship thruster configuration. A more realistic approach would eliminate that desync issue mostly, with the added benefit of bringing back some balance between ships and get out of the "<insert small 1-seater fighter here> dominates everything" meta.

(*) good ol f(x)=a.x .. but of course you can go crazy with bezier curves ;)

Today on Spectrum!

You could live an entire life in the verse on one planet, do everything on that planet, and when you want to go further or do something in space, that's when you use your ship. A lot of ground gameplay would enhance the game by so much and would instantly make base building make even more sense and have purpose. It would add realism. It would then make sense to offer camping mechanics, more realistic survival elements, hunting, fishing, etc., and would open up possibilities for boats. Imagine building your own remotely located cabin next to a lake, where you have a boat you can have fun with, where you can hunt for your own food, and just live a completely isolated life where the only time you leave is to drive into the downtown where you buy stuff, and where you don't even need a spaceship. Am I the only one excited about such a thing?

Not sure anyone could realistically look at what CIG have produced to date with half a billion dollars and approaching 1000 employees and think "Yeah, let's also add a boatload of other stuff to the scope as well! That will definitely happen!" I mean, if someone wants a game like this, why not just play Ark or Valheim or any of a thousand other planet based building games???

Speaking of Ark, in the same thread..

I can't be the only one who wants tamable dinos in Star Citizen right?

Just bloody well play Ark then!

Also...

It has never been a "game about spaceships".

LOL, funding tracker says otherwise

Skins sold 5.5 years ago still not in game, and apparently there are even older skins.

Wants to add pets to the scope, but discovers they are already in scope and were to be delivered for..... checks notes 64 million! Just before ship modularity at 65 million. I'm sure they will be available any day now!

Complaint about lack of progress is explained in comments by a defender of the faith...

What happened is a very complicated re-design of a core back-end system that touches on just about every part of the game. Making it complicated and time consuming to do.

That back-end is what they call PES. The first bit dropping in the upcoming 3.18.

On top of that they also did a lot of the work to update the rendering engine in the game client (Gen12 renderer). This also touches on a lot of the game client.

So, we have 2 very big chunks of work that can't be broken into smaller bits being worked on (by different teams) happening in 2022.

These are the foundations for multiple systems AND even more detailed environments.

Its complicated because its complicated and somehow this is stopping a 1000 people company from delivering more updates while a small part of that company works on the rework to some core systems. Amazing!

An absolute river of righteous salt here...

I'm legit going to die before this game ever comes out. Honestly... we're not even "Backers" anymore, we're essentially "enablers" of a pathological liar who's made the end of his career on selling hopes and dreams.

Yea, I know it's salty. I've spent more on this game than probably all the games I've bought in the past 6 years or so, because we always seem just a couple years away from a game I can see myself never leaving. But after 8 years of following and funding we still just have a tech demo to show for the multi-player verse and not even a light at the end of the tunnel for the single player version that was marketed to release in 2016.

I'm just exhausted with Chris and his never-ending delivery of disappointment.

Not to mention there are already a number of space-themed building games where that is also possible, with the added bonus of exploring other planets, or even new systems. Space Engineers, Empyrion Galactic Survival, and Dual Universe are the ones that immediately come to mind.

Heck, I’ve been playing my alt in ED almost entirely on foot so far, while taking Apex Taxis for space transport.

Some of the SC community really need to get out there and play more games!

Taking bets now that the next build won't be out until December 26th, following an impassioned plea by CR himself on Spectrum on the 25th where he makes more promises he won't keep.

I'm in for $100.
Along with a lot of fantastical retconning of 2022 and how much amazing progress they've made. But, you know, behind the scenes and they can't share it because spoilers.

Chris Roberts, imagining the pre-sales: "Yes"

Imagine there's no game
It's easy if you try
No meshing below us
Above us only dreams

Imagine all commandos
Pledging for today
Ah
Some people say I'm a dreamer...
But I'm not the only one.
We hope some day that you'll join us...
And the world can be scammed as one.

Just to finish it off in a fitting manner ;)

On a more important note...

The Last of Us part 1 is coming to PC via Steam/Epic 3rd of March next year...
