Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

Wait, so basically it is has been nothing more than yet another database swap so far? :)

If I understand this vaguely correct, the "replication layer" adds a relay service aka message broker between game server and client and is supposed to store a server's "state".
The one time I could log in to the preview channel and get out of the bed, the inventory often didn't load, bunker elevators flickered in and out of existence and some players were invisible. The usual.

What would probably have been the eventual 30k disconnect was replaced with 30 minutes where nothing worked at all (elevators, terminals, ships) until it eventually recovered.
Early days.

There is no relogging in Star Citizen, right?
Right...?

In this case, it could be that re-logging and running back to the terminal multiple times can be long enough to get into the next "tick" (anecdotally about every 10 minutes) and re-generate demand. The supply/demand is supposed to be global (regional?) and shared among servers, right? Right?
In theory yes - in practice the massive server desync and lag will make that time a rough estimation at best, and a very optimistic bet in any case.

Dug up some more dev gossip from the internet's archives:

Nothing shocking, but some familiar themes...

Seemingly an ex-CIG dev on Chris:

It's a shame because the issues stem from the top, as in Chris Roberts. They have a ton of talent at that studio but his micromanagement and need to have everything how he wants is killing it.

I say this with first hand experience of working at CIG and having friends who still do.

I believe in it because I used to work on it and have many friends who still do so I want it to work for my friends careers.

What I dont believe is it coming out anytime soon because of the god awful mismanagement, interference from Chris Roberts and the greedy additions of more ships to buy when there isn't even that many basic gameplay loops yet.

I don't really get why he has such a hand in development. He went to be a Hollywood film producer and was out of game dev for 10 years or so before embarking on Star Citizen. As far as I'm aware he didn't do much in games during that time. Yet he doesn't leave his team's alone and let the people that are paid to develop, actually develop. Dude should just stay back and let the professionals do it.

Mental to think that some people put him on a pedestal as one of the greatest designers around.

From the people I've known who (had) worked there, sounded like crunch hell.... For a game that isn't even on the horizon of being released yet.

Every game I've worked on has 'built tech that doesn't exist yet'.

One of those was RuneScape.

It's a meaningless claim.

Some third-hand professional concern:

This game's never leaving "alpha".

I worked with a former producer on that game, and that was 5+ years ago.

Suffice to say, the term "Don't let Perfection be the enemy of productivity" is referring to this company.

A vintage 2015 ban? That has Sandi written all over it.

Onto other matters, I would imagine we will should be getting the end of the year letter from Chris any time now, doing a thorough victory lap on the record funding year among other "never been done before" things; and also the "financials" blog.

Chris will congratulate backers on holding the line.
