Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

When there's background radiation like this, it's hard for trolling to trigger the geiger counter...

This is not a game, stop treating it like one...compare this and the development time of GTA6 a game with 1/50th the scope and has been in Dev for 12 years... that's a game...this is a space sim with groundbreaking server tech, all new engine they would have created themselves but decided to give us a two to three year break...the list is monumentally long so I'm just going to end it with, if they said it's going to be in the game then it's probably going to be in the game.

😮
Yeah that’s like one of the poster children of CIG not delivering so it’s kinda odd to use it, all you’re doing is getting people talking again about that time they did false advertising

🤭
But did you Answer the Call to Hold the Line?
In another 7 years, we might be get One Moment Please, Caller, While I Transfer You. I'm brimming with anticipation and excitement

Apparently no Solar Flares in the Server Mesh test - because the code wasn't compatible with server meshing

Why would Solar Flares .. only visible or present in one system .. care about Server Meshing? 🤔

Christ alive, so the stuff they built for the Pyro citcon demo didn't even have future deployment in mind. Just another pocket demo full of fluff. Why am I surprised 😁

(On the blocker maybe it's because it's a timed event and needs an 'authorative' / global timing scheme or something?)

"Did a bunker on a 30 FPS Server"

Source: https://new.reddit.com/r/starcitizen/comments/1b5mzbv/did_a_bunker_on_a_30_fps_server/

it's 2024 and Bunker/AI combat missions still being the worst part of star citizen to showcase. People keep tryna blame the server, it's not just the server. It's just dog and hella lame compared to titles from ing 2010 and below
Sad. Even a 30fps server and the AI is still terrible.
My lord. I've been out of the loop on SC for a while and I must say, things look like they have not improved whatsoever. This looks like a bunch of gamedev college students got together and did a group project for a wave shooter, but couldn't figure out the AI pathing, among many other things..

This is just sad at this point really.
Fun fact it is impossible to have a 30 sfps server with 9 or more players online in total. The game literally starts to buckle after 9 players. It's not bugs or errors causing sfps to drop (for the most part). It's literally just players existing.

I've been on enough fresh servers and old servers and populated servers and dead servers to have tested this pretty thoroughly. A notable example was when I suffered a 30k on a particular server shard, and then 10 mins later or so rejoining that same server shard and it being between 1 and 15 players for hours (most of the time around 5). Saw the sfps fluctuate.

THAT'S what we have in 2024 after 11 years. RL better ing turn this ship around HARD - because no online game should exist with such hands-off lightweight netcode (100% client side authoritative hit reg ) and STILL not be able to maintain industy standard tickrate at 9+ players. When every other game is managing vastly better with 100s of players and much more intensive netcode.

"I agree with the premise.

That said, a surprising number of the things you are bringing up are solved by, or more easily solved once, server meshing is in place.

  • The reduction in scope for a server means that server can handle more people. So the persons-per-server goes up.
  • But the server stops being the shard, so the persons-per-shard go way up.
  • This pushes up the TIC time considerable, which improves physics (and makes it more possible to solve the issues that exist).
  • AI, basically the same thing.
There's other tech debt that worries me.
  • We haven't done armor at all.
  • We haven't done physical damage, at all
  • We still don't have models for most dropped things. We still can't hang suits in suit racks.
  • The ship backlog
  • The system backlog.
  • Rivers and roads are non-functional at this point.
  • Nothing functional on procedural building interiors
  • Remember the AI barrista?
  • Maelstrom. That's not a little thing.
  • Still haven't made blades nor AI crew (I suppose SQ42 must have that, and it's feature complete... right?)
  • No heat mechanics.
  • Basic EM/IR mechanics non-functional.
  • Combat mechanics still not fleshed out.
  • Ship's mass isn't dynamic yet.
  • Ship's performance isn't dynamic yet.
  • They want airfoils, but since the ships aren't designed with center of mass over center of lift, that means each ship will need to have fake, bespoke airfoils. That's not started.
  • Medical is still just a magic ray/pen.
  • Salvage is still just a magic ray or two... and it seems like this will need to be completely reworked with maelstrom.
  • Depressurization isn't a thing, and CIG hasn't clearly defined how it will work.
  • Planets still have basic alignment issues.
  • Physics is... really bad...
The list goes on."

And this one, solid on its own right but in fact very representative of how broken the rest of the game also is:

Every patch since 3.19 has introduced a new bug or series of bugs into the 890 Jump.

I get that it's a luxury yacht, but it's also a $900 ship that people have spent a very large amount of money on & they deserve a properly working ship.

I just discovered a new bug today. Apparently, ANYONE can open the doors on the 890 Jump, regardless of whether they're in your party & don't need to shoot it first or anything. This is on top of the pre-existing myriad of hacks that existed for getting onto the 890 Jump without permission. What use is my $900 ship if any bloke that wants to can just hop onboard & steal it?
And this is in addition to:
  • Med bay control panel not working. (when using it, instead of standing in front & controlling it, you turn & sit sideways at it & can't do anything)
  • Water sounds all throughout the ship (especially the port side, which is ironic because there hasn't been any water in the pool/jacuzzi since 3.19.0)
  • You can no longer sit down at any of the chairs in the dining/conference room
  • Missing sheets/pillows from the guest bedrooms
  • Main hangar doors will magically close after being opened
  • Cargo elevator damages vehicles loaded onto it when raising/lowering.
  • Players clip through the passenger elevator when raising/lowering
  • list goes on...

This is gonna be the stuff that breaks some of the hardened whales ;)
