Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

Better luck next week, CIG. <3 No hard feelings, sometimes ya gotta meme out the frustrations ;)

Is Star Citizen finally called a game or still just a proof of concept?

It's a feature-full, completely developed game that CIG has sunk thousands of hours into perfecting. Graphics amazing (ships look beauuuuutiful), little to no performance issues, only networking troubles you'll face are your own, run amazing on any hardware. Can't stress enough how polished it feels now. CIG has really outdone themselves.
Only real con is that it's browser based, but inputting your CC info is engaging and clicking "buy ship" really hits hard. Plus you get the personal satisfaction of knowing CR just nutted when you do it. 10/10 on gameplay and engagement, give it a spin.

Still proof of concept. Whenever I encounter bugs that have been around for the better part of a decade or I still can’t reliably do simple actions like drink water or use an elevator, I’m often reminded of this scene from the prohibition movie The Untouchables:
Bartender : That green beer you’re peddlin’ just ain’t any good. Bowtie Driver : It ain’t supposed to be good! It’s supposed to be bought.

When even hardcore SC players see SC as a broken piece of junk...
[SC patch] broke even more somehow, more crashes, invisible debris, more broken missions, so many missions you just can't do right now because they're completely broken, falling through the planet at random times has increased at least for me and people I play with...
...
I'm finding it a hard time to find reasons to play outside of just wanting to be in space and fly my ships
...
I can't recommend playing it to anybody because everything's broken, everything's lagging, all the missions aren't working properly. The next patch is going to physicalize so much that for the average player who has an hour maybe in their evening to play it's going to take them an hour just to gear themselves up, get their ship, get their cargo and to leave, then how are they going to complete the hour long cargo mission? or the mercenary mission that won't spawn or the Bounty mission that the NPCs are kamazing you 90% of the time?

The question that will really blow his mind though is: Do we really think SQ42 is anywhere near ready or going to fare significantly better?

Can we please stop this alpha 'work-in-progress' nonsense! The game is twelve years overdue. Stop implicitly forgiving/excusing this utter cluster-farce!

As for SQ42, if they have to fit it into what works in the engine, well it's going to be a very narrow 'game'.

10 years. Chris said 2-3 years, any more and things would become stale. :p Their first predicted release date was circa 2015, when they said in 2014 that SQ42 would be released end of the year with SC not far behind.

They've been lying to the backers from the start though.

Indeed. The game is actually already released in early access. Been released for years. All games that receive post release improvements or updates are also by definition "work in progress" anyways, so SC is no different there from most of already released games with ongoing support, early access or not.

All this situation just needs is the game press acknowledging it with the usual reviews etc. 12 years of one of the wildest monetizations in videogames suggest that the game press could be interested in offering the market an assessment of the product so to inform purchases. Alas, I suspect the game is in such a sorry and broken state that not even the game critics dare to touch this with a barge pole.

Sadly, most video games "journalism" these days is more focused on hating gamers than reporting facts about anything.

The servers are so bad right now
I can't believe how bad the servers are right now. I have never experienced such instability. I hope that something is done to fix this issue. I understand that server meshing is coming soon, but if the instability issues do not clear up, I think it will be hard to love playing this alpha until they are. I don't know how the servers are going to be when 3.24 goes live, but I really hope that it's not as bad as it is right now.
