Somone having fun like me
Oops, forgot it's not something important to have fun...
Amazing! Someone who is a big fan of SC asks the question if its a scam and decides it isn't! And the basis for this is he's having fun.
Well, colour me surprised!
Unfortunately, this isn't a good argument.
Let's just say, for the sake of argument, CR is indeed on the take, siphoning off large amounts of money, and he doesn't have any plans to finish the game. He's just riding it out along with Ortwin. Meanwhile, players are enjoying what is there while saying "It can't be a scam! I'm enjoying the game!"
Does that mean its not a scam? And then let's imagine, there comes a point where CR writes a letter saying SC development is shutting down. They tried, but the tech just wasn't there yet! Not to mention how its all the goons/backers/someone else's fault. Before riding off into the sunset with the piles of money he took out of the project.
And then, do backers say "Well, it wasn't a scam, because i enjoyed it!"
Now, just to make sure i'm clear here, i don't think it is a scam in the sense that CIG/CR is doing to to take money from backers without delivering a product. I'm sure CR wants with all his heart to make the game of his dreams.
I will agree it has aspects of a scam though based on how CR has clearly lied multiple times over the years to backers in order to keep the funding going. I mean, what do you call something where the boss has intentionally and repeatedly lied about the state of a product to those giving money if not a scam? I struggle to find a better word for it.
When asking whether SC is a scam, its worth keeping in mind that a scam doesn't always mean an obvious one or one where no product is delivered. Theranos was a scam without a delivered product, and i still don't know if Elizabeth Holmes was really trying to make a product or not. Fyre Festival was a disaster in management, but not an intentional scam, and they tried to deliver... something. But it was still a scam. Maybe Billy was so egotistical he thought he could still deliver right up to the end, but there were other people involved who must have known it couldn't be delivered. Chronicles of Elyaria was also a scam in hindsight (and with a bit of foresight as well), but in the early days people would shout down those who called it a scam.
Sometimes scams are not the product of malicious intent. Sometimes they just grow out of mismanagement, egotisical leaders, and other negative traits, that ultimately lead the project into its downfall.
And even should CIG succeed in delivering something approximating a good stable released product, it still doesn't clear its history or validate it. CR still lied to backers many times and he continues to lie to this day.
If you are a backer and you are fine with that, if you excuse it away, then don't complain when one day someone takes you for a ride and you lose a lot of money.
