Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

Of course, the main difference between Theranos and CIG is that CIG didn't take money from people with that much money. I guess Calder will get his money back slowly, with interest, over the coming 5-10 years. 5 million a year or so, perhaps more if CIG actually ship SQ42 at some point.
It's a standard redistribution of wealth from the poor to the rich via a vehicle that entices fervent belief structures and concepts. Kinda like church organisations.

A pertinent comment from the SC thread on SA

Part of the Cyberpunk issue, at least for me, is it exposed how little game developers are willing to explain what their game isn't.

Players who get caught up in multi year long hype cycles eventually convince themselves of all kinds of things, and marketing departments are not inclined to tell them they're wrong. I remember seeing people believe they'd be able to enter every building, that it would feature complex simulations, that they'd be able to do anything.

No one ever says "No, you will not be able to do that", it's more "That sounds like something we'd love to have in the game".

Just realised how much I'm wasting everyone's time talking about this in a forum about Star Citizen, of all games. You already know all this lol.

This really is an issue with SC. Its not just CIG saying everything will be possible (which is downright misleading), but backers also convince themselves everything will be possible (which is downright stupid, they clearly don't understand game development), and CIG never tell the dreamcrafters "No, you won't be able to do that" (because that might slow down the money train, better let them keep believing everything will be possible).

Is it odd that this gave me a slight sensation of vertigo?

tbh, it's not any devs job to track what ill dream some hc fan crafts. You'd be busy with that trash all day instead of making the game.

Nah, makes total sense. The new clouds do add a decent sense of interim scale looking down there, with the cast shadows etc.

Most insane vertigo I've felt for a scenario like this is in NMS VR though. Actual depth perception in game will do that ;)

(A 2D vid can't communicate it of course, but here's the kind of thing that really sets it off ;))

Is vertigo the dizzy feeling standing over some unexpected distance downwards? or the phobic feeling you get when confronted with heights.

It's used for both in casual English really. (The general 'too near the edge' sensation, and the more extreme generic fear etc)

VR is particularly good at triggering whichever flavour you're susceptible too ;). (You know where your foot is, and your eyes are telling you convincingly that there's a helluva drop just beyond it...)

Aren't they the same thing?
We have Schwindel (dizzy, can also get that from getting totally boozed up e.g.) and Höhenangst (you don't always get dizzy when the fear creeps up your throat and chokes you. if you get dizzy on top that is very bad and can lead to actually falling). Naturally Höhenangst prevents you from falling by going full paranoia. You can train that away or lessen it.

By bombs i mean any sort of missile or bomb. Surely they can't be that expensive.
Or failing that, can't you just noclip over in the air and take them out with lasers?
In SC, you have plenty of tools to kill someone or a ship landed on ground. And you have also tools from ground to kill you while you try to do it from air (Ballista, anti air weapons like the Animus, turrets from landed ships, the Tonk, Cyclone-AA or MT, Ursa and the future G12a) .

Jump Town 2 is the first event to give a real usage to Combined arm for an ingame objective. And for what I've seen, ground defenses can be pretty effective against air attacks.

Well, some games make it a main game loop. Not the boxes maybe. The logistics. Though in Satisfactory you can package items into boxes or bottles. Then you can put them in containers. Then you put container onto train. You can't carry boxes though. Nor containers. The trains do that for you. You can carry the little packaged items though - they go into your pocket dimension. This is advanced scifi - we don't carry stuff around with hands.

I mean, if you know what you are doing in SC, you dont carry the boxes by hand either. You use a tractor beam. Much faster.

Just imagine if backers counted as investors.
In other news... I was chatting with my Norsenet ISP on Discord last night and he turned my net speed limiter off for a bit so I could download and play some 'Ready or not' with him...seems he went off to bed and forgot to turn the limiter back on...I'd better go download something else before he wakes up and turns it back on

I have said it before, but will say it again, that is none too shabby and considerably better than I get on my Sky FTTC.
