Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

BNB was at the 2017 Frontier Expo, was certainly an ED player before that although I don't remember him being ED exclusive or even majority, by the time of the Expo he was mainly streaming SC.

But the idea he was one of the "biggest ED streamers"? Nah.

Of course they can. The majority of SC's playerbase aren't cryptobros that buy into P2E games, Star Atlas' CEO has absolutely 0 history in game design and studied something to do with finances. Earth 2, pretty much straight up a scam with little to no progress updates at all. Don't know much about Cryptoland but these are all completely different "games" to what SC wants to achieve. While SC has an Alpha you can play now, these have pretty much nothing (well apart from Cryptoland maybe).

So yes, of course CIG can and will survive this because these are completely different target audiences. Most of the refunders and SC community actively shuns these crypto scams, something both can agree on.

Nah, you misunderstand. I'm not suggesting the whale SC backers are crypto bros, but i would say (evinced by statements from many backers over the years) they are moon bros.

Shoot for the moon!

And how is Star Atlas a different target audience to SC?

Its basically the game sort of "game", just with NFTs.

Except it isn't, the whole thing is gonna be based around NFTs and Blockchain, you're not gonna have normal gameplay loops. They have zero, absolutely zero credibility that they can pull this off. SC Backers may be moon bros, but they're not utterly dumb either. There is no credibility behind Star Atlas, SC had Roberts which atleast had some experience with making space games.

Star Atlas' audience is people that want a "metaverse" people that want to play the game and earn money doing it, while that will probably not really work out either, SC players are Second Life people. SC People that have a playable alpha are not gonna jump ship to a game with nothing but pictures, a "dev" team with next to no game developers and they frankly know that what SC is attempting to do is hard, and Star Atlas with their tiny budget of what, 50 million? Isn't gonna steal the show any time soon.

Some streamers go and some come (Cpt Flint, Emulated Penguin etc), that is just life, but yeah Bognogus has been streaming SC among many other space games including Elite for a long time. Not just after EDO.

Given the 10 year (zero released products) delivery and delays track record of Chris Roberts and CIG, do you really think they have any credibility left at this point?

Compared to no names led by some business guy? Yeah.

No, compared to nothing. Just try to answer the question based solely on CIG and Chris Roberts merits for a change, here again your context and my previous question for reference:

A Star Citizen 2022 prediction:

  • Ci¬G will go radio silent until April after 3 months of company restructuring and departmental development budget cuts disguised under the heading of 'Planning week'
  • 3.16.1 release will be delayed until at least February or March with more planned 3.16 and further planned gameplay content being removed or delayed until 3.18 or later
  • A much depleted 3.17 patch will be delayed until Q3, 3.18 won't appear until late Q4 at the earliest or realistically, Q1/Q2 next year
  • Server meshing won't appear this year in any substantial form due to 'technical reasons'
  • Pyro won't appear this year due to 'technical reasons'
  • Ship sales and marketing strategies will ramp up accordingly with game development slowing down even more
  • Sqn 42 won't appear in any form, whether it be a vertical slice or any firm announcement of further progress in it's development this year

Call it a hunch :)

Not in the slightest....but I don't have an accountancy fetish and outside of funding state sponsored terrorism, don't really care what people spend their readies on and on what 🤷‍♂️

CIG raising half a billion, via what is universally agreed to be a buggy and incomplete alpha, is a striking story my friend. You don't need to be into the niche accountancy stuff. It's just a great big brassy tale ;)

We've had enough hints now that whale purchases, rather than sheer volume of new backers, are the primary driver of that cash.

So whales are part of the story. New whales are part of the story. (And if you're gonna raise your eyebrows every time I mention the latest rapid demi-concierge, then you're gonna need a weekly round of botox just to lower them again ;))

Because flagging those guys isn't about shaming them. It's about tracing a second part of SC's mystique: Are its mammoth sales driven primarily by current pleasure with the alpha, or by future dreams of a more finished product?

It can be a mixture of the two. But the guys who stop playing (like the above fella), the big spenders who flip within months and start calling SC a scam, the regular trail of concierge-types traipsing into the refund sub (like this guy just today). They all lend some weight towards the second scenario.

And if SC never makes it to its various promised lands, that's kinda important. That's a lotta guys (doubtless unwisely), throwing money at an alpha because its pretty, or because it's garlanded in dev talk of future advances. Or because gamer's are just really bad at judging game dev ;)

Bottom line is though: That would be a lot of guys who essentially got conned. And that does feel kinda important. (Not terrorism tier important, I'll grant you. But there are other tiers of importance out there ;))
