Star Citizen Discussions v7

Ho ho ho, where have we heard that before? Pull the other one Chris....

Not only the body remains in the seat, but it also plays the animation caused by the direct input (hands controlling the joystick and throttle). While you walk around in SC your viewpoint moves, the model of your character moves according to your inputs, the hitboxes of your character move with it, items held by the character move, the point from which bullets leave the gun move. In ED the viewpoint is the only things that moves along with the camera. The difference is between your entire representation in the game world and just your viewpoint.

I see lots of words that tell me nothing except you missed the point.

That point being that no matter how you want to craft it, walking about ANYWHERE in ANY game is a simple matter of moving the players pov camera and nothing else.
That includes Star Citizen.

That's what walking about in a game at it's simplest actually is. Simply moving the camera that represents the players pov. The only reason you are trying to argue it isn't "you" that is walking around is because a body - which obviously isn't you because it lacks a head - is left in the chair.

In short - you have the position that the viewpoint represents your "character" and that moving it around is equal to walking around. Hit boxes and whatnot don't matter here. The viewpoint is what makes the character and so moving it around is the same as having your character move.

Your position is that the viewpoint doesn't matter. That if the "body" in game doesn't move, then it's not "walking". Missing the point that that is EXACTLY what walking around is. You are just insisting that it doesn't count unless the program drags along an animated avatar.

You have a point - so does he. He's right...so are you. But like it or not, simply by being able to move the "camera", he's done 95% of what is needed to walk around the bridge even by your definition

Out of interest, are there any good VR games that are first person? Or is this a tough nut to crack?

The Serious Sam VR remasters just make sure you have good VR legs first. Same goes for Subnautica but is pretty much one of the best FPS sort of experiences for VR IMO even though it's still early access. People cannot stop saying good things about Onward as well.

I dunno if you'd consider Superhot VR and Robo Recall FPS due to the teleport mechanics but they are pretty solid. I've heard good things about Doom 3 VBFG, the OG Doom VR mods, and Alien Isolation though I've only tried playing that last one.

Of course, there's also Lone Echo and Echo Arena as others have said.

I also highly recommend Metroid Prime played through Dolphin VR.

**On Topic**

It can be done, and many people can get used to free movement with practice, and there's many different ways to handle it that work better for some. With enough options, you can find a way to allow most people to play your games. The issue is, you need to think long and hard about how to implement VR in your game and you need to design around it early on if you want it to feel like anything other than a tacked on gimmick and want it to be comfortable for users. CIG have not done this.

They are so desperately predictable at this point it's not funny. No, thing they call 3.0 in Evocati won't be ready before 20th December, their own scheduling denies it. If it will be, it won't qualify of already very loft standards of PTU.

But yeah, they might not have much of the choice.

Now: Heh, buy some ships and merch and we will get you 3.0 by the 20th of Dec.

20th of Dec: We are soooo close to releasing 3.0, just a few more blockers.

25th of Dec: Holidays

2nd of Jan: We are hard back at work, heres another ATV! 3.0 is just around the corner, but we have identified a few more blockers. Don't worry, the team are hard at work. To celebrate the new year we are having a ship sale!

12th of Jan: We'd like to reveal something we have been hard at work on. (insert new feature that is flashy and completely unecessary for core gameplay, and even questionable who will use it). Isn't that great? It of course has expanded the scope for 3.0 so we will deliver 3.0 a bit later than planned.

(several weeks of ATVs later)

12th of Feb: 3.0 is now just around the corner. The team has been hard at work and Evocati have identified several new bugs. We are hard at work dealing with those. To celebrate the immenent release of 3.0 we are having a ship sale.

23rd of August (year to be determined): 3.0 is finally here! Lots of great features in this release, and to celebrate we are having a ship sale. The Pioneer is also now 20% complete! Therefore to celebrate we are releasing new batch of limited Pioneers with bigger cargo space. The new Pioneer XXL will have twice the cargo space of the old one, allowing you to set up your homestead in half the time. This ship will be on sale for the low price of $2000! With only 100 available, be sure to get one while you can! In other news, (super flashy feature announced last year) hasn't made the cut for this release, so we will move it to 3.1.

...sounds legit

Another new website? What on Earth for?

Because old one is remembered as belonging to company scamming gamers out of their money.

To be fair it is classic startup path - company struggles to deliver, marketing thinks they can keep it afloat with fresh coat of paint, because it is damn cheap and fast comparing to actual delivery of product.

Why do you think Spectrum was a highlight of end of 2016?

Exactly that's why.

20th December hey. Source?

I truly believe CIG will release "a PTU" thing before end of the year, in whatever state it is. If they dont this time I think the backlash would be really serious.

Having said that, I also said the same thing before Gamescom, so I am known to have been wrong on this before... :p

Interesting choice of motto they've got there, BTW.
They could have gone with "Fidelis ad finem" (faithful to the end) or "Fidelis ad mortem" (Faithful to the death):
Instead they went with "Fideles quoad decedemus" - Faithful until we give up. (and I can offer 'Faithful until we fall short' as an alternative)

I mean, it's perfectly fitting, but it's a bold move to put that that on your letterhead.

Ah OK, so presumably you'd need millions of players to make any significant difference to the background simulation? Or are players' actions weighted so that they have more significance than NPCs'?

Well is the 1 Player to 10 NPCs is the ratio, then you might not need that many player to affect a localised economy.

Find a small enough system and get a concentration of players and you might have enough weight of commerce to compete with the NPC population

I think they're going for "faithful till we die" - although dēcēdō also means "to desert, abandon"... lots of unintentionally amusing alternatives below.

According to Wikitionary (not the best source, I know), decedemus is the "first-person plural future active indicative of decedo". And decedo translates as 'desert or abandon', or 'disappear' amongst other things. So 'faithful until we run away' would seem a fair translation...

EDIT: Ninja'd.

Unbeliever! The Board of Trustees would never allow this!

Probably meant faithful until death just chose a rather passive word with the wrong connotations especially when paired with quoad which is again not giving and activie striving defiant feel.

My dictionary (Collins) says to depart yeild surrender give up or resign but can be used as to die in the sense, with the head of the family dead, they fell on hard times.

When I saw that letter with that motto I actually assumed it as fake due to the mottos suggested meaning
