Star Citizen Discussions v7

So I've mostly been lurking this thread, but i though I'd throw in my two cents on this whole lawsuit. I'm by no means a lawyer, just an arm chair warrior ;).

I'm a little bit baffled why the fans are so upset. CIG has stolen IP in the past, so why is everyone one surprised? Second, Crytek is actually going for their cut of the sales. The donations and pledges are taxed. They are in reality pre-orders for the game(s). CIG isn't going to have a huge burst of sales when it's 'finished'. Everyone that is truly interested has already bought in, and i doubt that they would be getting a cut of the 'micro' transactions. So them going after CIG right now is the best idea for them to get a slice of the pie they were promised.

Again, two cents.

I have some doubts that the courts will consider such nebulous concepts as 'pre-orders' particularly relevant when considering the case. CIG have been selling stuff. On a website that says 'play now'. And making huge sums of money doing so. And people have demonstrably been playing the game, as the umpteen streamers and YouTube videos prove beyond doubt. When you sell stuff, you have to comply with copyright. And you have to comply with contracts. Regardless of whether you try to describe sales as 'pre-orders', or even 'donations' or 'pledges'. The case will come down to the hard nitty-gritty of whether the stuff CIG has sold has complied with the specific contract(s) they signed with CryTek, and on whether they have breached CryTek's copyright. Attempting to obscure what you are doing by describing it as something else isn't much of a defence, and neither is 'we haven't finished yet'. So yes, CryTek are trying to get money now. Because (CryTek claim) they are legally entitled to it now. Because CIG have (CryTek claim) made money from CryTek's IP. And if Crytek's claims are correct, CIG will either have to stop selling what they are, or will have to pay CryTek more for the privilege.

The trailer is probably meant to be a nostalgic reference to warm the hearts of the tiger of old Wing Commander fans. Compare that 'trailer' to the one from 2012, I don't know, after six years of development I would expect something more spectacular. Especially the eyes of the Hammill model look creepy, the uncanny valley strikes heavy here. But well, its the invitation to acquire manhood. Let's see what will happen tomorrow. If they show a mission I am really curious about the flight model that we will see.

Agreed. Popcorn and buckets for all!

I don't know if I'm just being prejudice against them, but their trailers all feel so very corny and unimaginative to me.
And I'm especially annoyed by many of their characters acting like they find themselves oh so gritty and tough.
There is no way I would be able to go through a whole game filled with those kind of cut-scenes.

Oh wow, another short cinematic without gameplay. I have to admit, the Mark Hammill model doesn't look good.

So it's just like COD:IW but they leave their mouths hanging open cos it's all so serious and macho?

That was not great. MH's face looks modelled on CR's here

Meanwhile the 'verse gets weirder

Ten bucks says that MH is modeled after how CR sees himself... Bonus points for washing spaceships with a sponge though. Beste sponge ever, would sponge again!

Does the sponge come with the base package, or do you have to pledge extra? If so, I don't even want to know what the MKIII Pressure Sprayer is going for.

So CIG is trying to escape the whole CryEngine licensing problem by going for GameBryo 3.0? It certainly looks that way, at least. :p

Interesting side bar: If you listen to lave radios early casts, one of the presenters was really enamoured with the idea of being able to clean his Cobra Mk III.

I should get a hold of that guy, because the cockpit of my Anaconda hasn't been deep cleaned (or even not so deeply cleaned) since I took it to Beagle Point:)
