I realise there is little new to talk about (So what's new, eh?)... but if we keep getting dragged into comparing SC with a successful commercially released product, someone might get upset...

Perhaps we should throw NMS into the mix?

Released with a couple of delays. Updated three times now, each adding significant new gameplay. Has a dreadful flight model. Seamless station to surface gameplay. A storyline, base building, buggies, FPS elements, space legs, trading, mining, multiple ship ownership, pretty rubbish space combat, impressive art-house graphical styling, superb music, free play and ironman options, engineering, nascent multiplayer, way more than a couple of moons round a single star, and an orrery integrated into their star map.

All done by a tiny team working out of very modest premises in Guildford.

I am helping here, right...?

Surely compared to this utter shambles, SC looks ever more the gleaming beacon of ultimate success and fidelity that we dull nay sayers are clearly too silly to comprehend. Yes?

Hallo Games keep updating and I even might buy their game. Dint jump on the hype.
Just like with SC.

Comparing projects is always a good idea, however it must be comparable.

Mass Effect Andromeda was also a project with many issues and road blocks, internal discussions, arguments and lot of problems in general.
They managed to get a product out, it was not the original vision, and we all know the issues, most corrected now, by launch.

This is directly comparable, because the engine used for ME:A was also not ready for that type of game. However the game was released and it's now playable.

The story is interresting, especially if you also follow the SC train wreck project.

Shows the importance of project management. Mass Effect had this in spades, being a big publisher.

With the amount of funding and time spent, a fully functioning game could easily have been released by now. Even with missing functionality to be added with future updates.
SC seems to always want to add something extra, or push the boat out there just a bit further. Or, oh wouldn't this be awesome, let's invent a whole new technology to do this and re-invent the wheel.

To an outsider, the whole thing is mind boggling.

A great example of a running misconception is above. Where you "think" that Chris Roberts implied that the sales of SQ42 are to be used to fund Star Citizen when what he said was a direct answer to the hypothetical question: "What IF Star Citizen funding stopped?"

CR answer was:

“First of all, we always have a decent amount of money in reserve, so if all support would collapse, we would not suddenly be incapacitated. We plan the scope of the development based on what arrives monthly by the people to support. I’m not worried, because even if no money came in, we would have sufficient funds to complete Squadron 42. The revenue from this could in-turn be used for the completion of Star Citizen.

So not only is based on an highly impossible extreme scenario of doom but it's also a completely reasonable and viable option.

This depiction of the subject is simply disingenuous I am afraid, primarily because it fully ignores the previous ocasions (plural) all the way to end of 2015 (closing on 100 million, i.e. well past stretch goals total amount of 65 million) where CR had already confirmed that both SC and SQ42 were fully funded and CIG had enough reserves to complete the whole thing. No caveats were made.

The need now to issue the caveat for SQ42 to fund SC should pledges stopped is a direct contradiction with those original statements (issued over a cash reserve margin of already at least 35-40 million over stretch goals) and it therefore shows not only a significant weakening in CIG finances but also the formal appearance of a tangible and explicit risk of non delivery, that were hitherto nonexistent.

Why are these "Star" threads even on the boards..
That game won't be playable until you are 40.
In my next reincarnation perhaps, as I've just retired at 65. I was a mere youngster of 60 when I backed.

Which is curious since the SC faithful keep saying the game's only been in development for about 2 years. I'm sure glad I got my refund a couple of years ago, before development even started :D

A quote from my original refund letter sums up my experience of SC -

At first I was very optimistic for Star Citizen and watched the first 24 hour live stream, every Wingmans Hangar, 10 FTC etc. But as time has gone on I have become disillusioned. The game I thought I was backing, which was due to launch in November 2014, has seemingly changed massively in scope and shows no sign of ever being finished. Every date CIG has set for itself so far has been missed and I no longer have any confidence in CIG's ability to deliver within a reasonable timeframe. I also have no interest in large fleets, multicrew ships and Organisations, which seems to be the focus of the community.

And in the 2 years since then things have only got worse :O

CR... “... We plan the scope of the development based on what <money> arrives monthly ...” ...

This has been widely commented on before, but this is not how professionals manage any large and complex project.

Such projects require, very broadly, these steps: scope, specify, design (in the process you set the designs in stone), plan, cost, budget, execute, and then continual monitoring, reporting and review of actuals vs estimates - time, money and progress - against the plan.

This is how professionals run a large project - and certainly any sizeable IT project - assuming the project is actually supposed to succeed.

I could go into proper risk and contingency management, but I'd bore myself, and similarly with change management, such as - CR, CRB, CAB, DRB, DAB, CN, CC, DRM (aka DM)... ...oh god I've started... ...yup... it turns out that Prince and ITIL really aren't fit topics for everyday conversation...

I'm really quite confused about the moderation of Spectrum...Mods don't now delete posts they dislike, but merely strike through the text...which is still perfectly legible. Since I made one of my usual moaning post directed at CiG, one of the mods struck through the text on some nonsense ruling, but the post itself has continued to be upvoted over the last 3 days. I fully expected an infraction notice or the banhammer since I do make a point of speaking my mind on Spectrum...

Linky

I, personally, find the Spectrum forums rather confusing.

And even then have you seen the price points..?
I recall watching a game expo session for that game,,,
Seemed like a lot of hopes and dreams.

I'm already pushing 70 this Sept so I honestly don't know if I'll be here when it hits the shelf. 40 to 70 ... I seriously doubt it.
