Star names in ED

Hi
This is a (very) long shot however as a present for the birth of our son last week a family member bought one of those name a star gifts.

Just curious if that name will ever make it I to ED, or even if the name it was named officially is likely to be in the game (I can't search myself yet)

Thanks.

The designation is 1392830 Centaurus

And is now named after our son and his DOB

Star position is
Right assention 13h 11m 4.75s
Declination 38° 28' 0.9"
Magnitude 11.64

Any other designations for the star?
Google search yielded zero results, so I think that even SIMBAD doesn't have an entry for that designation.

Not sure if you'll be able to find it in ED. I'm struggling to find any catalogue names for your star.

You can see a picture of it (or at least a bit of the sky its in) if you use the coordinates 13 11 4.75, 38 28 0.9 and enter them here http://skyview.gsfc.nasa.gov/current/cgi/titlepage.pl

You'll get this image...

Your star coordinates are dead centre. Doesn't help much with finding it in game though sorry.

Thats a lot of info. Thanks guys

Apparently the name is officially registered in the star name registry. No idea how official that is

Hate to break it to you but there is no official public star naming service. Stars are named by the International Astronomical Union and those are usually catalogue names. Stars with real names only acquire them through consensus and usage by the people in the field. Though FD has named stars in the game for people before.

Yup. According to the International Astronomical Union (the recognised international body for astronomy), for such purchases you get "an expensive piece of paper and a temporary feeling of happiness". These 'star naming' services have no official recognition whatsoever, and nothing they do ensures that the star in question ever gets referred to by the name specified - or that someone else doesn't 'name it' after something else, for payment. To put it bluntly, it is a scam. https://www.iau.org/public/themes/buying_star_names/

Hi
I did wonder as much. Still it was worth double checking and, regardless, assuming it is a real star at least it may be cool to get my 1st discovered by on it in ED no matter the name.
Scam or not it's a nice gift off the family and comes with some pretty astronomical pics to put on his wall (I thought it would go well with my ED star chart in the games room but the wife was not having it.
