Game Discussions Star Ship Simulator

Are there many ppl here who have downloaded and play the Demo ?
I'll be DL it soon and if it plays as well as the vids and tutorial show, I may KS it.
Have a nice day

Play the demo on Steam - it is excellent (and of course free).

Do the first "tutorial / training" thingie and you learn how to navigate and fly the ship. Run the second one if you want to go through the cold & dark power up - to show you the extent and detail of the ship systems (you need not do that one). Wander round the ship, marvel at the NPCs working away in Engineering, play the piano in the lounge, see where Admiral Cluck Norris has wandered to (hint, he never goes in the Jefferies tubes), play with the bridge lighting to have a disco, and much more to find. It is hard to appreciate that this is the work of just one guy so far.

The demo on steam is due to be expanded soon I believe, at the moment it is incomplete and so far Steve seems not to be in the demo.

BTW the kickstarter exceeded £400K

I played the demo. Did the cold start procedure. That was new and pretty interesting. It gives you a small peak into the inner workings. Once complete it should give an engineer geek things to do. Then I took a short trip to Sirius and back. The need to use different posts on the bridge to get going was refreshing. The starship atmosphere is very convincing. It really does capture the Trek vibe. They are nailing it.

I finally DL'd SS and played about 3 hours. The things about SS I like:

The interface(s) is very intuitive ... very simple and easy to learn.
I like how warping or fast travel is modeled - no space dust or lightning bugs - its like flying through a fog (I hope they don't add the fireflies)
You can watch on the Hologram / map, the ship moving to its target
The galaxy map is a hologram you can walk up to but can't zoom in; you change the range setting at the Scanner station. It may not be as functional as ED or SpaceEngine or maybe it is, I don't have enough time with it so far.

?? I have:
No Pause
No Save - maybe I haven't found it yet
If target is through a planet you're currently orbiting around, you fly through it ??
Galactic map does not match known Milky Way structure

For now that's it ... but I do like it so far. Its carving out game time that ED has been occupying.

A few things I'd like to see with the scanner is a search function. I don't think it has one but I could be wrong - still learning. I would like to fly to Epsilon Indi where New Africa is or the Pleiades, or back to Sol after a long trek by searching instead of guessing. So far most systems have astronomical designations instead of names and I have not figured out how to get my bearings with the galactic and stellar scan modes yet. ... but i'm learning
the new build sounds good

also ... I found out it does save ... I had only played tutorials and extensions. I started my first mission and its like ED, saves when you quit.

I went to Epsilon Indi in SS and ED. In ED there is a planet/moon Mitterand Hollow that orbits New Africa very fast. I did not see any planet with a fast orbiting moon in SS. Maybe its planned (or a placeholder).

I'm going to check out a few other systems and how they differ between ED and SS. Fun it will be, I hope.

In SS there are 5 silicate Terra Planets; 1 ELW; and 2 gas giants. That's different from ED ... above ^^.

Mitterand Hollow in Elite Dangerous is a data transfer mistake - either someone misplaced a decimal point when bringing in the system data from Frontier Elite 2 / Frontier First Encounters or (my theory) the orbits of Mitterand Hollow and Schneider Relay accidentally got swapped:

These images are a comparison of the nav map in SS vs ED (orrery view). The SS hologram is not interactive but it will indicate where your ship is and where the target system is located. To select a system to fly to, you have to use the Scanning Station.
With the ED GalMap, you open it and you are a part of the map. In SS, you are simply viewing a hologram of the map in one of several scales (i.e., system, stellar, galactic). You can walk up and through the SS map and walk around it (but you can't select). The only labels are the ship and target. To fly to a target system you move to the Helm station to initiate flight. The SS concept is a little cumbersome imho, and can use some enhancement - more labels on the holo. I hope they add system names later because it would help orientation. This is the map from Stellar setting zoomed out to 50LY.

I'll probably move on from learning navigation to how the ship works. I haven't even played the Start Up Tutorial yet.
The biggest thing they need is to add a shuttle or a choice of shuttle types, to fly down to the surface. I know that's in their gameplan but until then, the game will need a lot of work to hold my interest very long - but then, I haven't tried to start my ship up and maintain it yet.
Its been announced a new demo will be out soon. I'll be on it when it hits the airwaves.
Thanks for the info Arioch. I didn't know that.
Have a great day

Daft question, has development stalled on this? I've not seen much news on the official website for some time and it'd be a shame to see it disappear.

Nope, lots going on - here for example screenie of dev build steam thingie:

There is also the Discord (can you view that?):

I had thought that there would be an updated demo by now, don't know what their thoughts are on this.

Yeah, an update would be appreciated by now. As a lower level sponsor I don't expect nightly Dev
builds but a Demo update every now and every 3 months, since Kickstarter, would be nice.

he make streams on youtube two times a week, where he shows what he is doing (very long streams, more than 3 hours each). There is one even right now.
