Starfield disappoints

Single-player is more than ok for me as far as Beth games goes. It opens game for mods. I wonder how many ppl would still play Fallout 3 or Skyrim if those were mp only with no user created content.

I spent more time downloading and testing mods in Fallout 3, Fallout NV, Morrowind & Skyrim than I did playing the games. Then I kept all the best ones and still would end up like 50+ (for NV and Skyrim at least). I love the concept of that idea again, but don't think I would be up for another round of endless mod testing and mod creating again. In fact I got my new computer 2 years ago, and have yet to get Skyrim back on just because of all the mods I had on it and am afraid to try and get them all working once again.

Either way, there does need to be more games like that. Another reason solo games always have been better...

The clip itself is rather disappointing except for the fact that it confirms that Bethesda is indeed working on the title which is great news but doesnt look like they are that far into it yet.

At E3 Todd Howard said they've been working on Starfield for many years already, and it is very playable right now, but they are replacing placeholder development graphics with finished assets so it's not looking presentable yet.

It sounded like they are in fact very far into it.

I fully expect to see a few more teasers this year, and a full release next. From the interview, I get the impression that the game is in alpha right now, most of the code is done and now they're down to assets and polishing gameplay.

They only showed a what, 6 seconds image of a planet and a station that could very well be just a render, and they specifically say: patience.. you are being a bit over optimistic here.

I have to say I'm disappointed - I have no interest in Skyrim in Space - most all my limited game time is spent in multiplayer with friends :-(

I'm 100% the other direction :) Bethesda doing an open world space game with the focus on single player, can't wait!

I can see an endlessly replayable game with no ganking or manmember posturing, thousands of mods to craft the perfect open world space game for each person (if they are prepared to put the effort in building a good modlist).

Basically this has all the pedigree (Bethesda single player deep open world crpgs made better with mods) that i was hoping for during the Elite Dangerous kickstarter, and coming out in 2020 it may well steal me away from even starting ED!

So overall i'm hugely interested in this game (as many people will be that love TES games) however i was disappointed at how little they showed us, maybe the most stingy of reveals i can remember (though TES 6 was about the same!).

My mind is loving all the possibilities a SP space game can have vs a MP one (where it can only focus on dull combat pewpew). The game design possibilities go through the roof with no MP holding it back :D

At E3 Bethesda announced they are working on a single player game that will release after 2018, then showed this small clip:

Basically they are saying come back in 2020 to see what their single player space game is all about.

And so begins the ED communities attempt to get the fanbase of another space game around the back of the bikesheds after school.

Nowadays "no multiplayer" is actually a feature, not a limitation. [big grin]

Indeed. And with no other people to break the games immersion, just imagine how much freedom we will get to actually blaze our own trail and be able to fully get into the game world for role play purposes, rather than be coerced into various flavours of PvP pewpew (over and over and over).

More often than not multi player games have a short single player campaign tacked on as an afterthought to fill the checkbox on the publisher's list. This is the reason why I deliberately shop for the "no multi player" feature, because there the whole money goes into the game I'm actually interested in and not into another PvP arena with micro-transactions.

You know, people seem to be bringing up "Skyrim in space", but let's not forget that the last new game Bethesda (Game Studios) have released was Fallout 4.
As for modding... That would be good, but given how heavily they seem to be pushing their Creation Club recently, it makes me wonder just how much will still be possible by the time Starfield launches. Of course, who knows when that'll be.

That's an interesting point. Bethesda level mod-ability game which has some sort of space flight involved?

I'm expecting a massive Star Wars Mod announcement within a week of release :D

Maybe it really is just me but can I be the only one here that might want this to be a step away from what Bethesda have done before? Does it really have to be a Skyrim or a Fallout except in space? Be nice if they took it a new direction.

I'm not overly complaining here I like those games heck I loved them but would it not be nice if they broke their mould and did something new.

People always think each new Bethesda game is just the last one rehashed.
'Oblivion was Morrowind, but dumbed down.'
'Fallout 3 was Oblivion, but with guns.'
'Skyrim was just Oblivion, but with dragons.'
'Fallout 4 was just Fallout 3 but with better shooty bang-bang.'

'Starfield is just Skyrim, but in space.'

And so it goes.

Let's just see what they do. Personally I'd be happy with iteration on their tried and true formulas, but I don't doubt they'll attempt some new stuff. They always do with their flagship games.

I was about to say that; in effect.

I think I'll come back and check when the real development starts.

They will most likely be breaking their mold with something totally new with Starfield. This will be their first game in their new engine, a next generation engine which they are on record as stating how they want it to be able to do much more than their current engine can, including thorough vehicles.

Expect more than just Skyrim in space. To what degree is the big question.
