Starpoint Gemini - anyone played?

Hi Mario
It's funny you mentioning SPG2, I was playing a good bit of SPG1 last night. :) Anyways, there is also a section for SPG2 over at Space Sim Central with quite a bit of discussion over a range of topics covering the game. Have a look for that here.

The Starpoint Gemini 2 Thread

Name is Starpoint Gemini 2 still in Alpha but it's pretty good, huge map and it's getting updated frequently worth a try.

There is no cockpit view, but it seems the devs have made 3 views: normal (3rd person), front view (closest to 1st person) and tactical turret view.

Nice looking ship, witch one is that? Is it a cruiser or?

It's a "Dreadnought" class ship in-game.

After playing for a while, I think it makes sense that the game doesn't have a real "cockpit" view.
The majority of the ship classes in Starpoint Gemini 2 don't really lend themselves to "dogfighting" style combat.

You don't actually fly what would be considered a "fighter" in this game. There are "fighters" in the game but they're units you launch from your ship rather than ships you ever fly yourself.

Ship "classes" in SPG2 are ordered this way from smallest to largest:
-Gunship
-Corvette
-Frigate
-Destroyer
-Cruiser
-Battleship
-Dreadnought
-Carrier

Out of these, Gunships "dogfight" fairly well as they can generally turn pretty well and have all their firepower in the front for direct shooting.
Corvettes can also "dogfight" as most of their firepower is still up front and they can still turn pretty well, but that's where the firepower starts migrating away from the front and towards the sides.

Frigates are sort of the "intermediate" class where you can still sort of "dogfight" from normal and first-person but it starts becoming impractical. A lot of ships in this class have half of their firepower or more facing in a direction other than forward and have a rather slow turning rate.
Because of that you're probably going to be switching back and forth from "turret view" in combat.

Beyond that the ships are more like "capital ships" and you'll probably be fighting in "turret view" most of the time.

I never played the first game, but I love Starpoint Gemini 2. Feels like the game that Star Trek Online could have been.

Apart from the fun gameplay, I am mightily impressed by a) the music, b) the graphics they pulled off. Those ship models surely look nice even up close, and a big plus are the customization features.

They also did some great work on the asteroids fields, the way the rocks cast shadows on the surrounding dust. It may not be entirely realistic but it sure looks awesome.

(The voice acting, however, is horrible imho and I have turn the audio chatter entirely off.)
