Starting Game Drops to Desktop

Me too, brand new installation. I get audio and the game is running but won't go full screen or run in a window. Alt-tabbing to it blacks my screen, things flash a bit, my secondary monitor changes resolution, and then back to the desktop. I can tell from mousing over the taskbar icon that I'm on a screen asking me if I want the game to pick my optimal display settings.

Oh , it's because I have a 4k monitor and it can't handle this resolution? I changed my desktop resolution to sub-optimal (2560x1600) and was able to alt-tab to the game and get past the GPU profiling and planet creation. Then I went into the display settings. Then I changed the in-game resolution to native, 3840x2160, and hit apply. Now it won't display again. Is there a work-around for this?

That hints at a GPU/Driver, possibly PSU, issue. HW/driver details needed.

I'll look for updated drivers, here's the current details.

Updated drivers, still fails. The game loads, it runs in the background, it renders in the background, it plays music in the background. I can alt-tab to it, and its thumbnail preview shows what it is rendering (attached), but it will not take full-screen focus. Attempting to switch to it flashes a couple of black screens as it does its DX device acquisition thing, and then drops back to the desktop where the game continues running in the background.

So at this point the only way I can probably recover, since I've now told the game I want it to render in native 4k and I can't get into the settings to change that, is to completely uninstall and reinstall. I assume the game can't handle the size of this render device, which is kind of bizarre since I don't think 4k * 32bpp is uncommon these days? Then I'd have to drop my desktop resolution below native in order to play it.

Try editing this file:

C:\Users\<Your username>\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Graphics\DisplaySettings.xml

(You need to turn on "Show Hidden Files, Folders and Drives" in order to be able to see the AppData folder)

You should be able to set the screen width and Height in there (Make a copy of the file first, just in case)
