Starting in solo and migrate to open?

theres really no reason to ever play open.

U rarely see human players anyway, but when u do the chance of them being a griefer r very high. Now that ED has finally stopped the NPC griefing and reduced interdictions in "safe" systems trading is much more enjoyable. i made runs yesterday in a hauler in the aulin, opala, lhs 3006, olivas and dahan area and was only interdicted a couple times, not successfully, and i surf the internet in SC so im not trying to avoid them but i do usually overshoot which tends to shake npcs. i had some missions in anarchy systems but i turned them down as interdictions r high there.

SOLO only for me until i get a Python!

I recommend always playing in Open, unless you hit server issues in which case a temporary switch to Solo sometimes helps.

While it's true that space is big, the inhabited area isn't so big, and there are a number of areas which see heavy traffic - you're guaranteed to meet people if you travel to Sol, Eranin, Lave or the Founder's World, and so on. It's also true that there are CMDRs who'll kill you, but I haven't had a single hostile CMDR interaction in the whole of Gamma. (Though possibly my combat rating, top-notch Cobra and focus on exploration bias that, and I'd be attacked if I were flying an unshielded Hauler around the Old Worlds.)

In any case, there are nice and interesting people out there, and though you might only meet them rarely if you're out on the fringes, it's nice to see them around.

(And you get the satisfaction of knowing you're playing in a slightly harder mode if you make your way up despite the unwanted attentions of CMDR pirates.)

If the player is approaching you and they dont respond to comms or turn away, you might as well blow them up... especially in Anarchic areas.

But i dont play Open anymore. The P2P network does not work very well with my network, if i get the host privilege everyone else is going to have a horrible time. Im sure its better than what i remember, but i dont feel like finding out at an inopportune time. The "Elite" NPCs can be just as gnasty as any real player.

OP: as you have probably figured out, there is no "set" answer to your question. Those who like open will recommend open, those who don't will recommend solo. Other than PvP, the game is the same in either. This isn't a "level up" type of game, so there is no need to stay in solo to do so. If YOU are interested in interacting with real people, play online, if not, play solo.

personally I´ll play open from the start. It´s something I´ve debated myself, but the explanations given by draigUK and mikey2305 have definitely turned the tips on open decision. Anyways, I don´t want to be alone in that vast galaxy. I guess that finding a real human being in the middle of absolutely nowhere must be a quite unique experience
oh man, am I eager for the tuesday to arrive...

Ive been playing in open since day one, June 29th. Ive been killed by another player once so far. Theres nothing at all to worry about by going into open play straight off the bat. However, I would advise doing all the tutorials first. The last one is very hard for new players. You DONT have to clear it to head to open play, but familiarize yourself with controls via the other tutorials and your ready to go. I havent played once in single player mode yet! So dont worry about heading to open play if you want. Theres no reason not too.

Im also a merc edition player to be, from my point of view solo play is like the original Elite - amazing but I have waited all my life to play this in open, I will launch in open, and stay there for the rest of the time I play this game, yes I will die a lot, but it will force me to learn how to play, how to survive and the best way for me to make my way in this world, but I would never knock any other player playing this in a different way.

Play whatever you like! But I would recommend Open.

-Because playing solo with 400 billion systems is a little bit lonely and depressing.
-This is not an MMO, greifing is not common place (as far as I've seen)
-There are natural mechanics to dissuade bad or illegal player behavior. Like attacking you randomly on sight.
-The universe is very static if you don't have real people messing with things.

The biggest reason I think is to inject a little bit of chaos/danger/unpredictability into the game. When you see a real player hollow square/triangle you are more aware, you analyze what their intentions might be, you check their loadout. It's exciting because it's unpredictable. They could be friendly, evil, or worth 1million cr if you kill them. With NPCs you know what's going to happen, they fly a certain way, they are predictable you will rarely get an experience that you could tell your friends about.

But with people players... They're totally unpredictable. (which is great!) They've ambushed me from pure stealth, they've chased away assailants, dueled in a battle zone... Each situation is one to remember, even the bad ones where you get 2 shotted because you weren't careful enough.

My point is, you will loose out on some fantastic experiences if you stay in the comfort of your solo bubble. And if you're thinking, well I'll make a whole bunch of money and THEN go open when I have an uber Anaconda, you have even more to loose then, and let's be honest, the longer you're in solo the more unlikely you will go open. Don't forgo the journey for the perceived future goal. And don't be afraid to die a horrible death for a great experience.

Join the Mobius PVE group if you want to play with people who won't gank you. No interdictions or player combat unless consensual (duels etc.) Check out the forum thread over in the groups forum and join up!

My perspevtive as a noob.

Do the tutorials, there are there for a reason. Start in Solo, and utilize what you've lesrned ftom the tutorials, upgrade your ship a couple of times, they are chesp in the beginning, experiment with the various componets of upgrades to your ship. When your ready, apply to mobis, practice, practice and practice some more, always following the rules. Make short excursions into open and practice, practice and practice somemore by increasing your durations.

Today, the buzz word tgat is triggering everyone is "Bully". EVERY BIOLOGICAL life forms on this planet (Earth) has a pecking order. The meek will not inherit the Earth as stated. Learning ones place in life is part in part learning how to live in this life. Turning the other cheek is to be commended, but constantly without reguard to yourself. IS ASSINE!

Be all you can be, but realize, that the population today is in excess of 7.5 billion and you may not ever be number one and if so, number two though constantly aware of number three, is gonna be devoting time and fsining experience to replace you.

After viewing vast numbers of post in regards to griefers (Trolls, Bullies). The vast number of issues stem from pilots (CMDR's) whom don't bother learning and practicing the basics and jumped into the deep end of the pool, without any or very little experience. Tis better to learn how to deal with bullies and their rules, then to expect them to accept your views. And that starts at a young age, when your a noob.

Played open since day 1. Despite what the hardcore PvE crowd says, your chances of getting griefed are about 1%. Even if you do, your starter sidey is free to replace. Solo players miss out on a lot of fun interaction and miss the chance to make a lot of new friends. A cmdr I ran across on my 2nd day of playing helped me a lot.

This is 100% wrong. The chances the person you meet is a griefer is extremely low. NPCs are really no risk, Iv not died to one since my 2nd week of playing. Trading with zero risk = boring and is about as much fun as walking to the mailbox and back IMO.

Honestly ive invited friends back in the early day who said "i'll stick to solo/private group at first until ive learnt the ropes". They never ended up leaving, its almost like they built up a bad image of what Open is throughout the playing until they felt uncomfy making the switch. For that reason id say Open from day 1.

Bit like drivers who have just passed there test but dont get a car for a year or so, when they do they have lost all confidence to get back on the road.
