Starting with VIVE and non-Steam version

Hi all,

Years ago I pledged für E:D but to be honest, I've never come around to actually play it.

Now I got myself a HTC Vive and I thought it's finally time to put some time into E:D. Unfortunately I can't seem to get it to work in VR mode.

I guess, normally SteamVR would recognize E:D and offer to start it right out of Steam, correct? But my Pledger version is stand alone and not inside of Steam.

Maybe I'm missing the obvious, but how the hell am I supposed to start E:D so it actually uses to Vive?

Im using the stand alone with a vive, start up the game, go into graphics settings and change 3d to hmd.

I think that should do it.

I recommend getting the EDprofiler http://www.drkaii.com/tools/edprofiler/
Once setup it will allow quickly switching between 2d and tweaking settings.

Without it setting up the first ED vr can be a smidge funny.

First make sure steamvr is running, start ED in 2d.

Go to graphics and set 3d to the appropriate HMD option, now quickly find and grab your Vive to find and accept the ok button.

With the tool, just select a VR graphics option or set your own, and hit apply.

What the above said.

1) Start Steam

2) Click the VR icon in the Steam menu bar

3) Wait for both base stations to turn green in the SteamVR window

4) Start Elite

5) Settings->Graphics->3D->HMD (Headphones) (unless you are sitting in the middle of a surround sound system)

Having said that, you will have a hard time learning the controls and wrinkles of Elite in VR. There are a lot of controls to learn, and no way to comfortably get out of the Vive to check a cheat sheet or online.

My recommendation is to get used to playing the game with a HOTAS or gamepad until it is all muscle memory.

If you are not afraid to mess around with stuff, you could use OVRDrop to display a cheat sheet of your control settings inside the VR cockpit, but it may be more manual setup than you are prepared to face.

Hi Grestorn,
as other have set, get ED profiler and make sure ED runs in 2D before switching to 3D

What is have to ad is that can add the ED launcher exe as a non-steam game, which makes thing a tiny bit more comfortable. You can start it right out of your Steam library.
Once you started Steam VR, the Play button changes to Play in VR
