State of the Game

if anything, i'd think the "insult word list" would trigger a notification. like an @ use for mods ...then they can review the post and deal with it if needed.

that way troublesome posters out themselves easily ...and you dont have to read some obfuscated reference in a string of posts to see what they're actually saying and making reference to.

censor lists just make mod jobs harder. not easier.

yea, but if you're insulting someone ...using a different word.. it's not really any different .. it's either amusing or it's not ...and going to result in corrective action or not. The word used doesn't change that.. it just makes it less accurate or less efficient.
All it serves to illustrate is that the poster is unable to express themselves using normal speech, rather than a profanity (or more) as a descriptive, surely?

With the 'improved' powers Mods have for those who 'cross the line' in descriptive prowess, it serves to further fuel imaginative narrative for the future ;)

normal speech is that which communicates the most concisely what the person is trying to communicate. Profanity is a term for cultural norms that try to control what those thoughts are at the behest of some interested body (be it a majority, or religious sect or other group). Profanity is a you problem, not a me problem. It should be a personal setting you can turn on for yourself if you wish (as well as add/customize it to your liking).

No, profanity isn't a 'you' problem... Try thinking why this might be so, if you have travelled outside of your precinct you may have gotten a hint why.

anything that is based around your personal norms of what is offensive and what isn't...is a you problem. what's profane for one people isn't profane for others. While spoken speach can't be muted on-demand by any listener, text on a forum can. It's a you problem. It's only a me problem in other media such as out live in public because you make it a me problem because you aren't able to just ignore it like you should.

the idea here isn't that censor lists stop such communication. it just forces the person to change the word they're using. they're still saying the same thing here. we're just obfuscating the message. It solves nothing.

This is brilliant honestly.

To others, explain to me using real reasons (not made up 300 year old superstitious ones or personal preferences) what exactly causes a word to be profane. It's just words and if those words are bad how can different words meaning the same things not be equally bad? It's just something that sheep blindly follow and accept and it serves no logical purpose other than controlling what people can say, which is petty and oppressive.

Of course it solves nothing, a turd will always be a turd no matter how well polished it may be, surely?

Of course it serves no other purpose than controlling what others may say...

I guess no restraints are placed on the behaviour of guests in your house either?

See, words have power.
Words are chosen to have an effect, and if that effect is to purposely cause affront or insult to another, then that is
1) not the purpose of the forums
2) against the forum rules.

If you truly believe what you wrote, just ask yourself why FD have implemented their policy on banning people who harass their employees.
It's just words after all.

This leads me down a thought-path that’s intrigued me more as time goes by.

Doesn’t it seem that which curses are considered offensive is shifting? The sexual/scatological terms that got our mouths washed out when we were cursing brats don’t really ruffle feathers anymore. Now, it’s the racist/misogynistic bombs that really set people off. A glimpse of shifting mindsets, it would seem.

Caveat: this is highly culturally specific. I can only speak from the viewpoint of a Left Coast Canadian. Your mileage may vary.

"Gay" is an example, Borko.
In Georgian England it had a totally different meaning. I've seen a street in Bath (built in Georgian times) called "Gay Street".
Highly dependent on location, too. Correct me if I’m wrong, but the See You Next Tuesday term is common and hardly offensive in the UK, I think. In my neck of the woods using that one can cost you your job...

I would say that the meaning behind what's being said matter more than the words chosen.

If i say "I wish you would get non-consensually pvp'd in your privates by a group of people" that would be no different than a statement about wanting someone to get 4 letter worded. I'd expect the same response regardless of the word used if that statement was used against someone. right?

the words dont matter. The message they convey do. Saying one word is worse than another that means the same thing is ridiculous.

Language use has changed over the years - it is true (even in the UK, believe it or not)

In RL I often use descriptives that would be censored on the forum, which is fine!

The forum is international, and open to anyone from 13 (normally) years old to communicate with others sharing points of interest.
It makes exceedingly good sense to 'censor' terms that may be offensive to others, to prevent either deliberate or inadvertent offense being caused.

If members do not wish to observe the rules they agreed to when setting up an account - an email to Frontier to request removal of their account only takes a few moments.

It makes far better sense to have censor lists be user defined to cater to the user's varying degrees of sensitivity and locality (which ..seeing as how it's international, varies and a singular list for all has no hope of being effective)
