Have you ever read "The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test" by Tom Wolfe?

Interesting read, though I read it many years ago as a teenager in the early 80's (maybe late 70's).

I still remember the argument discussion with my mother afterwards; I now consider that "conversation" as my real introduction to critical thinking.

Didn't read this one, so I was just looking it up on t'interwebz...
There's a great review on 'Goodreads' which is worth reposting for comedy value...!

"You know those books that blew your mind in high school? Like Siddhartha or anything by Bukowski or Nietzche and you read it in a cafe trying to look cool to the older hippies who ran the place and one of them sleazed up to you and said, "you have beautiful skin" and gave you a copy of Tom Wolfe's book on the Merry Pranksters and tried to get you to go out back and smoke a suspiciously tangy looking joint which you decline but take the book, and read it and are briefly tempted to run off to a commune you've heard about in Arcata where women do their own pap smears with hand mirrors (that's what the brochure said) and then twenty years later you find a copy of Woolfe's book in a weird used bookstore and re-read it and think, Christ, hippies were *ing annoying?"

I can't say the same, and it certainly isn't a source of shame. What people do to themselves is entirely their own affair. It is only when it affects other people that it becomes an issue.

I went to a stag-weekend in Amsterdam years back. I must have done. There's photographic evidence.

Very well said... agreed... and yes, I think we are all grateful for this little corner of varied discussion, and the blessings of the mods who (to be fair) could take umbrage at some of the postings!
