State of the Game

LOL! I remember reading Jim Morrison's biography, and he was in awe of the amount of acid Hendrix used to take... I mean, really?? Jim Morrison thinking someone else's acid consumption was excessive?!?!
Jeez, those must have been some seriously far out times...... 🤯
Have you ever read "The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test" by Tom Wolfe?

Interesting read, though I read it many years ago as a teenager in the early 80's (maybe late 70's).

I still remember the argument discussion with my mother afterwards; I now consider that "conversation" as my real introduction to critical thinking.

he is right with a lot of things, but this Mars idea is just nuts - he is right though, that a backup somewhere would be necessary if we would want to survive as a species for a longer time - but it doesn't look like we would even make it to 3 million years as the genus homo, so there is no point, we are misfits and really bad survivors. We lost in the game of life, because we are really terrible players.
Indded - it also keeps our atmoshpere attached. The Matrix got it right. We are a virus. And now the 'body' is indeed heating up to get rid of us. Albeit through our own endeavours and horrific short-term'ism.

I went to an utterly chilling and 'very private' presentation on climate change whilst working for <can't say, but you'll have heard of them> presented by <ditto> about ten years ago. I shan't bore or depress you with the 'headlines'. However, pretty much everyone walked out with very sober and long faces, shrugging in a rather stunned silence. However, being resolute Brits, a few of us went to the pub and eventually went home no longer sober or quite so miserably well informed.

I can't say the same, and it certainly isn't a source of shame. What people do to themselves is entirely their own affair. It is only when it affects other people that it becomes an issue.
i had an involuntary experience with a drug - guess it was a hash cookie or something - I didn't know about it, ate it and it made me feel sick to the point that i had to puke. Otherwise there was nothing like people say it would be - no mind altering state at all, just a really bad stomach. So the only drug I'm using are some nice alcoholic beverages from time to time - but i have to drink a whole lot to feel an effect - I guess I'm just weird with stuff like that. Then again, i can't drink champagne, that makes me drunk.

Considering your post about DOOMED humanity, I don't see raising intelligence and cognitive potential as unconditionally beneficial in evolutionary sense.

We skyrocketed in brain development, and it only brought doom to us, if all those apocalyptic scenarios will turn out true.
If we just stayed as "dumb" as other primates, we would survive longer as a specie.
I hate to say it, but it only takes one scenario to play out.

In cheerier news, we are closer in time to T-Rex, than T-Rex is to the Stegosaurus. So yeah, longevity isn't predicated on IQ, although the moral is that pretty much all species go extinct eventually. Happy Sunday everyone!!!

Meow-meow! (...anyone remember Amy's Baking Company?)

True, but it makes a difference if a species is around for 150 million years or just a few.

IIRC, typically the first few times, one does not necessarily get the psychological effects.

Yes. Drugs work differently for different people. Some (like alcohol) are legal. It doesn't mean that all the others are somehow worse. In fact, most of them are significantly less harmful. Anyway. This seems a little too serious for this thread...
