State of the Game

I think me & Piggy are about in the same place (from our own viewpoints) - my frustration with the performance & lighting in Odyssey has been growing, possibly as the content so suits me and has added elements that are great fun to play - it is just that the 'improvements' are coming in with sufficient detriment to the overall experience that I'm miffed, a lot!

I'm sure the devs will create a quick fix for the worst of the issues introduced today - but do wonder just how long we will have to wait for these significant performance improvements promised.
After 7 patches and 4-5 months, I'm now seriously wondering whether they'll ever be able to deliver any significant performance improvements to Odyssey. It seems like there must be something fundamentally wrong with the engine or codebase.

It's a weird one - why would you commit to months of optimisation without a clear idea of what needed optimising? And yet we seem to get frame rates going up & down almost randomly with no clear feeling that things are improving. (yesterday I was wondering why people were talking about huge FPS drops at settlements, but today I am getting them too - very strange)

I don't remember who wrote it, @Ian Skippy possibly, but it was mentioned that the "A" team are likely working on a rendering engine rebuild - which kinda makes sense, the current one appears quite seriously broken, for sure!

I'm a simple soul, as long as I can do shooty-shooty-bang-bang to NPCs and steal on an industrial level, the game is good and totally absorbing... bonus points for permitting us to get up close and personal with gorgeous plasma weapons too, or course. 🥳

Today, bar the plasma stuff, the game has conspired against me to remove the fun... I'm not happy.

I made deadly on that account 11 months ago... Now being so close to elite I have been mat collecting a lot and was hoping to benefit from the 'faster' progress in CZs (more higher rank NPCs) but 8 kills in an hour is not play in my books!

When they un-break whatever the patch broke, I'll come back and play again, till then I think Fallout 4 VR gets a revisit.
in regards to fallout 4 and settlements - I remember a statement of yours, where you said, that settlements can care for themselves if properly set up - this is not completely true, because the game is cheating in case you aren't showing up to the fight - in this case the outcome is a dice roll and doesn't depend on your actually setup.. This is especially cumbersome, if you have more than 20 settlements of your own - in this case you have to deal with a settlement raid pretty much every day and this can be pretty annoying, because if you don't show up to the fight in time, that dice roll might damage that settlement in question regardless of it's actual defense value,

Honestly? Because Braben wrote a post that they will fix it, that would be my thinking. But that would border on heresy.

And the funny thing is, I'm not getting drops. I logged off at a busy settlement 4 patches ago, I check every time if anything changed. And every time I log in, the same 34 fps await me :D

So I have no idea what's going on any more.

You are correct - when only a few, well-defended and provisioned (so all stats healthily exceed the population resident) settlements exist raids are negligible (going by my restart recently - my saves would no longer load!), previously, there were a lot of raids on the poorest of equipped settlements, but I'd also made a couple of poor decisions along the way.

currently I've not joined the Brotherhood of Steel and am refusing to go back to the Minutemen every time I've ticked a box. The game is pushing me toward Nuka-World currently, which is quite interesting as I'd expected it to highlight Far Harbor first!

I only get large drops when coming in for landing (and this was at settlements offline, with no fires or scavs). Once I'm off the Apex it is fine (well, better than patch 6). If you're staying landed you could be missing out on all the fun :)

Oh I had fun getting out of my ship. After the patch hit for the first time ever I dipped into 10-15 territory, with a huge load lag I have never experienced in ED since it came out. This was one of those hotel settlements, since those seem to be the biggest offenders, so that's where I test the performance.

if you haven't played nuka-world yet - that DLC is quite a tick more challenging than the rest of the game - be careful there, especially in hardcore survival mode, damage is high and traps are plenty in that dlc area.

with settlements I meant, that one shouldn't take over too many settlements, because they will become a burden, if you pass the 20 settlements mark - end of freedom to play as you like, because one of those settlements is pretty much always on attack and if you don't show up, the game cheats and will damage those settlements. Choose a few settlements wisely and don't take over every settlement you come across, if you value your freedom and don't want to become an errand runner for your settlements.

My restart is because the saves from the previous game refused to load! I'd just finished all of the zones in Nuka-World and was waiting to restore the power... That was certainly a better challenge than Far Harbor, I'm looking forward to doing it again, but this time not trying to share zones out equally - thus forcing one faction to rebel!

It was quite nice for the modders to create the patches needed to put the DLC content into the VR version, even if it is a little fragile at times.

I can see how that would happen, especially from the perspective of a recovering alcoholic...!

Phil Mitchell NPC texture issues reported ... @sallymorganmoore

Now that is a beauty! If Sally comes in all annoyed, I hope we don't come across as being annoying?!

Having said that, I did ask her for some free stuphz in exchange for a Phil picture a few minutes ago, so I'm probably not helping the situation very much...!
