So basically the gameplay only makes sense if you just kill everyone and deal with their farts later.

In elite, you only have the dead option. You cannot capture their escape pods and bring them in alive for a different award.

That would be interesting gameplay. And that's obviously not allowed.

I mean, it says we have "commerce" and "diplomacy" contract in odyssey to. But so far, all I've seen are fetch quest and shotgun diplomacy.

So, a dead or alive contract make sense, and the only way is to kill everyone.
Technically, your overcharged tool can stun, but it's counted as a kill.
