Perhaps they mute you until you say something interesting?
regarding what? he's the credited discover. he gets to name it. in his published works he named it without the extra i. Some other randos thought it sounded more latin-y with an extra i.
it has nothing to do with the US. We just happen to prefer what the discoverer went with and not the others.
hence, it's not us removing an i. It's some other people adding an extra one.
....
Pronunciation drift...Actually Davy proposed ALUMIUM - it was only later that instead of deriving from the English "Alum" the preference was to use the Latin alumen to derive the name from. Also although credited as originating the name (in a fashion) he was not the "discoverer" of the element.
You have Mr Webster to thank for the lack of the second i in US usage really - I am not sure if he just hated diphthongs or was just determined to enforce Boston pronunciation on everyone, in any event he is for sure to blame for Churchill's "Americans and British are one people separated by a common language" quip (yes I know Shaw produced the original).
On a separate but related thing (and this is a genuine query) why do Americans pronounce "solder" as "sawder"? That makes no sense to me, I can see that people deprived of familiarity with diphthongs can have difficulty with "buoy" and pronounce it "boo-wee" but "sawder" just baffles me.
Blunt, ..... but highly accurate.

In what pretendo reality? The one where beavis and butthead are connoisseurs of humor?
I'm extremely interesting, all of the doctors and scientists say so.
Given that you'll find accents vary wildly in the millions of square miles of the US. I generally hear "sodder" more often than any other pronunciation. The L generally getting left out. I usually pronounce it like soleder.
more importantly ...what are tins? Why are tins made of aluminium when they could be made of tin.
S
Well tins are made of aluminium.more importantly ...what are tins?
cans are generally made of aluminum.. .though you do get bottles here and there as well.
edit: though i guess the containers that some cookies are sold in are called tins. But those usually are made of tin or really thin steel / tin mixes. like soup cans and the like.
Well tins are made of aluminium.

Tins are still tins. Mostly smaller than cans. Then there is tin cans. All of these can be made - and often are - from aluminium. Also, you must have meant cup holder, not placeholder. You sure you dont have cat parasites messing up the language portion of your brain? Sounds like you're just using the wrong word to describe something. Like how when we say xenobiologist is a role in the game. when we really mean it's a placeholder for what might be a role in the game. And we're saying "placeholder" in the same way that powerplay, as it was released, is just the initial version of the mechanic.

Well we can't call them tin tins.a tin can can't be made out of aluminum because tin specifies the material ...not a shape of a can. calling an aluminum can or a steel can a tin can is just being wrong. sure it can be done, but it's wrong.
just like how you'd be stupid if you said glass bottle to refer to a plastic bottle.
though, obviously this logic all gets thrown out when you talk about brass knuckles. Where while brass used to refer to the material at some point, it now is the only term for the item and the item can come in the form of any kind of metal and still be referred to as brass knuckles. But that's acceptable until there is a better recognizable name for it.
that conclusion is why we have a game who's addition of levels of ranking above elite is still called elite.Well we can't call them tin tins.

If gravity makes women's assets get longer, why doesn't it make men's dongs get longer?
