you could improve the situation without reducing the size of the player base by splitting the game in various ways... so you aren't choosing less by being focused, just different. like if fdev had their current setup, and also allowed private servers with mod support for instance. the population would be split but that wouldn't really matter since players don't really benefit from most other players anyway. and not having to compromise as much because there is a new choice, means the existing official game client can go all in without fear... or learn from popular mods what players prefer.
as it stands, the population of the playerbase is already being split between cross play, odyssey/horizons and i guess cqc for the 3 people playing that and it's at no benefit to gameplay and we are surviving that.

Yes, like when the original Team Fortress mod for Quake was released. It added a whole new dimension to the multiplayer experience...but I guess FDev are making the game they want to make...Like I said. I take it for what it is and the features/gameplay that I know are coming. Beyond that, it could certainly be more than it is, but it probably never will be all those things.
