State of VR in 3.3 Beta.

Fired off a few questions at Malic VR during his livestream yesterday. He seemed to indicate they do have a dedicated VR dev there. (He recently visited Fdev)

And some of the changes like the galaxy map not hovering boxes in front of what I'm looking at any more, shows that they are doing dedicated VR fixes and changes still.

So even though it might not be on the scale or rate we want, they are still doing VR work. :)

EDIT: As others have mentioned as well; all the previous big betas were a big mess in their first version (this one is surprisingly good in my experience, except for the vr weirdness) probably some of the things reported had fixes in the pipeline already as the beta launched. We will have to see how it progresses the coming weeks. :)

I really hope there is a point update before the weekend :)

when i finally got into beta (had to install twice as just could not get oculus store beta running in VR) both times i was in the system scanner after about 5 mins of failing dismally (I didnt know i needed to bind some controls which are in the multicrew section apparently????!) something happened and the controls stopped responding.
until this is fixed there is no point me even trying... not when i have so many other titles and limited time.

i would love to have a dabble over the weekend however.

Apparently regarding the FSS freezing out binds.

It's due to a sort of tutorial happening the first time you do an FSS scan. This can be resolved with a workaround, where you start the game in 2D, do the first FSS scan there, thus also doing the tutorial and after that, it works in VR as intended.

All I did was press my UI Select button a few times (I could hear what I presume were invisible prompts closing) and then the FSS worked just fine. Obviouly you will miss the tutorial as you're dismissing it while it's invisible but it's not rocket science to figure out the FSS so no great loss imho. Better than firing the game up in... *Shudders*.... 2D!!

[haha] I've actually started using 2D more often recently, though mainly just to get faction influence updates or to do some outfitting. Otherwise I fire up the Rift. Glad to hear the workaround for the FSS, I'll give it another try after we wrap up a faction war in the next day or so.

When you enter the FSS you get a tutorial. This is invisible in VR, but you cant do anything until you get through it. Use the 'select' button (whatever you use in menus, for me it is primary fire) exactly ten times. You should hear a little click every time. After the invisible tutorial is done and you're ready to move. You may need to repeat this every update.

Then you have to content with a variety of bugs in VR. Hopefully they will get is fixed soon, as finding the signals without any blobs is a tad hard, especially combined with the blue fog bug and float orbit lines etc.

After fighting with my rivg for 2 days, finally logged into the Beta with my CV1. All I can say is it looks amazing visually, was really expecting the worse after reading some comments about the lighting. Looks beautiful to me. Haven't been to a neutron star, will stay away until it is fixed.

I found you can make out the blobs if you close one eye. :)

Ah, I was wondering about that... First system I tried to scan, I had the blobs, looked like it did on the livestream. Second one, no blobs, just little circles that were either easy to see and aim for, or invisible and just popped into existence when I rolled over them! :D

Then I had the issue that scanning a body resulted in black space, no body shown. Using the latest drivers, and the Horizons version of beta...

Didn't try closing one eye. ;)

It's been so long. How the heck do you start ED in 2D? Everytime I try it starts SteamVR.
Not sure if ED Profiler works with the beta, but if it does, it has an option to disable VR.
Otherwise, you probably need to either unplug your headset, or start it in VR and turn off VR from the settings. Then restart.

Thanks! That worked. Now how do you restart the FSS tutorial?

You could also just go into the graphics options and set the 3d option to OFF and hit apply.

I did this for the RSS tutorial, just looked at the game screen on the dash desktop, then set the 3d option back to HMD headphones.

Never even bothered to remove the rift.

I think this is the VR services realising "Hey this is a known VR game, I'm starting up".

Only way to not have this happen would be to stop all running background processes.

When starting up the FSS, is anyone else seeing a brief flash of random ship geometry?

I’m using a Krait and I think I’m getting a blipvert of either the forward landing gear or one of the lower hardpoints. I’ll see if I can get video footage later.

Edit: I've grabbed an image from some video, apparently my Science Station is up the rear bulkhead of the fighter bay or SRV hangar :/

As far as lighting and colors in Vr try this: Turn down gamma to the left and up the interface brightness to you liking. It's not perfect but i find it satisfactory.I am using Rift with the latest Nvidia drivers 416.64

The right one, I guess?

It surely looks amazing, and you possibly can have to get more or less accustomed to the lighting over time. It's better in the bubble, btw, used self destruct on my Conda to check. In Colonia with all those stars, it's just too much for me, in particular with that glaring cyan from the keyboard beside me and the burning red lights. Tried several attempts at reducing that damn brightness a bit, but neither custom gamma offsets nor tone mapping seem to really work anymore (they do in 3.2).

Neutron stars I keep away from too for now, Cyclops mode is unreliable and hard on the eye. Dropped out five times from the one near Shinrarta (V888 I think) because I couldn't find the right spot anymore and finally had enough from blue laser beams hitting my retina (ok, only the left eye this time) :D

O7,

Anyone else noticed the nice little touch added to the cockpit controls? No, not the bug which inverts the pitch direction! If you press fire on your stick, you see your commanders hands press the trigger on the virtual stick as well, seems to do the same for pip management (although not so well) and a few other controls such as deploy hardpoints. Nice little addition I thought.
