Just remember. You cant steal a ship in a space station without walking up to it and sneaking aboard!

but we don't actually know this yet. Stealing someone else's ship may be possible without actually walking to it... there may be other ways for all we know.

That's because the gameplay hasn't been invented yet.
Hopefully it will be more than a mere gimmick, and we can explore planets on foot (or move into atmospheric vehicles like cars, planes, hot air balloons...), visit towns, meet people in bars, etc etc.
Hasn't been invented yet? Of course it has. There are a number of games where walking around after docking is normal. Star Trek Online for one, it's a major part of the game. Be nice if Elite has something like this in the future if you ask me, where you would do your in game banking, shopping for commodities etc
It was even hinted by David Braben that not only space stations but the huge capital ships of the Empire and Federation will allow players to dock and walk within its massive communal areas.
Even the Federation Battle Cruiser Farragut was designed with having public access in mind. This being its great walkways and massive cross bridges between ship sections. They will be the staging areas for missions and military NPCs presumably.
Imagine it pulling into a space station jumping out popping open your fuel tank and filling up just like real life filling up your car haha.
But acturly adding players ability to walk around would give the ability to add different forms of crafting and repair etc which could be interesting
Also most important part there needs to be bars and gambling were you character can meet people, lose lots of money and get drunk. maybe a few hotels to haha
