However any future in game expansions of content, even if bought through the FD store, will see 30% of your purchase price go to Valve.
Just as it would if you bought extra content through steam.

If you buy any future content from FD then %100 of the purchase will go to FD - irrespective of whether you've got a steam key or not.

Well some people are afraid that new players might almost exclusively come from Steam, with a part of the money going to Valve, as opposed to former players who used FD store, with 100% of the money going to FD.
Personally I am glad I will be able to launch my game through Steam but I will still make sure to make purchases on FD store, so that more money goes into development. Problem solved :)

These peoples fears are unfounded at best, uneducated at worst.

The first thing to consider is that if the majority of copies sold comes from Steam from this point forward, those are copies that may have otherwise been completely unsold. 30% commission to Steam be damned, 70% of price is still a magnitude greater than nothing.

It's a huge community of potential buyers. There is a reason that thousands of titles give themselves the opportunity to tap into it, and a reason that it grows rather than shrinks. People can pound their fist over the 30% commission all they want, but the success of Steam doesn't lie---if it wasn't worth it they wouldn't be getting publishers to put their product there, this one included.

I bought the game on Steam. Know where I found out the game existed? Steam. Know where I NEVER saw anything about the game in any way? Everywhere else. Fact is, I don't frequent review sites and haven't even since it became so obvious that those reviews are purchased, it's a waste of my time. That pretty much leaves the hype train I get to see as Steam and whoever has advertisements festooned in other internet places I might wind up. Buying hard copy on a store shelf is effectively gone, the gaming stores are almost exclusively console titles and the big box stores like best buy have a token shelf to pay homage to yesteryear when there was three rows of those shelves. This means that without Steam visibility, I pretty much don't find out about a game.

As an aside, I wouldn't get into too much of a kerfluffle about buying paint packs from Steam either, as it doesn't appear to be an option--the in game launcher still brings you to Frontiers website and so does the launcher, and there doesn't appear to be any visible offering for them on Steam.

I couldn't tell ya if it costs money for them to get a Steam Key for existing game copy, but frankly I doubt it. I've played a few fully free to play games that migrated to being offered on Steam that allowed themselves to integrate, and it seems fair to assume that a game that has no upfront money from you at all isn't directly investing money in you like that, or if it is, it's a trivial sum. Besides, giving players the opportunity to use the Steam front end works in Steams favor anyway because it exposes you to advertising for their sales and whatnot, so it seems reasonable to expect that they'd not only do it for free, but make an effort to entice it into happening.

Let us bathe in GabeN's glory ! thanks to Braben's benevolence ! they are gods !
in all seriousness I am happy I love steam and , once the download is done I am putting a positive review up as there so many lies in the negative section

Some questions for people that have get the steam key (might help some people inc me)

1: If you get the steam key do you have to start again in the game?
2: Do you still need the elite dangerous launcher installed?
3: If you die is there a option to wipe your save game and start again?
4: Do Alpha and beta testers still get all the extras as normal via steam?

Hmm...

I feel a bit crude talking about 'cuts' and 'percentages' but yes, once you've linked an account, any future purchases on the FD store are affected by this.

Perhaps your following of the Gospel according to Gabe is adversely affecting your breadth of knowledge...

1 - No, it links to your FD account so you pick up where you left off.
2 - Yes, it's part of the Steam installation
3 - The same option to wipe your save is in the Steam version - it's exactly the same game.
4 - Yes, because it's tied to your FD account.

This is FD listening to our feedback.

This is FD doing something about it.

Why?

Because they are fricking awesome. That's why.

Thank you guys and gals!

I agree 100%.

That being said, personally I am not going to generate a steam key for Elite Dangerous. Most of the time I launch ED from Steam, which shows my status as “playing non-steam game Elite Dangerous”; I do this mainly for the screenshots. Yes, every time I take a screenshot, I do it twice, - one through steam, and the other through Elite, (actually have a macro bound to a “G x” key that does both). Unless I am missing something, I do not see any additional benefit of generating a steam key and moving it over. I prefer the money I spend for future purchases to continue to go 100% to Frontier.

Even though I choose not to generate a steam key, I do like having the option to.

Again thanks Frontier for listening.
