Steam wont update

im kinda in a pickle and dont know how to progress. pls halp
my steam ed launcher is stuck in the "update required > close launcher" and steam just doesnt update.
im a newb so i cant run the launcher from folder and update there. (you have to buy/redeem ed error)
i tried setting up this launcher but idk if i did something wrong, but it doesnt work. (steam says no executable found)
turning on and off doesnt help either

i also have only edh4.0. do i have to have base ed to update edh?

On steam, go to file, exit, and then steam will close completely. Wait five or six seconds, then restart steam. That should trigger the update to download.

I'm on steam as well, and I have also experienced the lag that sometimes happens when an update is in the queue. It doesn't always show up right away on steam, or if it does it sits there saying there is an update available, but doesn't start the download.

Shutting down steam completely and then restarting it normally triggers the download to start as soon as steam starts. At least, that is been my experience over the last seven or eight years.

If that still doesn't trigger a start for the download, completely restart the computer. When steam starts up from a PC restart that can also trigger the download.

Live Horizons isn't distributed through Steam unless you own Odyssey; the base game is only 3.8/Legacy.
If you want to play Live without owning Odyssey, the only way is to go through Frontier's launcher.

It does as Steam and Epic game clients Stay open forever unless you Manually Force close the applications via menu commands... even removal by using close from system tray is not enough..

Any stuck scripts are never reset untill ALL of the back ground tasks are killed... SO if steams updater script crashed and locked up its never reset untill all background tasks are killed this is normaly done on Closing the app via menus...
But if its totaly smegged the script it will still be frozen and need a Task manager kill command for steam and epic clients they both need full script kill commands

Windows Does not kill applications on restart/reboot any more as it uses fast resume which will just keep the same scripts going...

Full power off is now needed in windows to kill back ground running apps if you can't ID them in task manager...

pc was turned off and on multiple times since yesterday. did even shutdown steam in task manager. no updating anywhere in sight. thx for the insight anyway @Leadfoot & @GraphiteGB

im not really sure what are you trying to say. i dont have Odyssey, but ive been playing on EDH4.0 since v14 came out. up until this tuesday (tuesday was the last patch, right?)
also idk if i understood the terminology correctly so far. running ed from steam launches "steam" launcher (with all the game version options), which is "the same" as frontier launcher, but synced with steam. running frontier launcher means launching exec from game directory. but since i have a new (dec 2021) account, i get the "you need to buy/redeem" error in this launcher.

well, you indeed need to have legacy downloaded to upgrade live. and now i do second this notion.
