Steelseries Sentry/Tobii EyeX vs TrackIR/EDTracker?

Just wondering if anyone's tried a Steelseries Sentry or Tobii EyeX?

Steelseries I think is (or will be) a branded version of the Tobii, the Tobii dev kit can be had here for ~70 Euros : http://www.tobii.com/eyex (not sure what it includes)

I've been watching some Twitch streamers using it and it seems remarkably accurate.

Predominantly the common use-case seems to games like Starcraft/Dota for post game analysis but in all honesty the mechanism it uses seems to be just like the TrackIR. Except it monitors your eye movements instead of your head movements, which makes me think it might actually be a better TrackIR.

I have never used a TrackIR so I don't know how easy this would be to integrate with ED.

Here's a hand on vid :

I just wanted to start the same thread :)
Not sure how well this would work when one needs to switch views super fast but it might be worth a try. The eye tracker can be ordered now and it is not that pricey (around 100€).

I don't think using eye tracking for head movements in the cockpit is as good as head tracking.

If you move your eyes to see around, your field of view will be reduced because you reach the borders of the screen.
This is not a problem when you use head tracking. Your eyes stay in the middle of the screen, the field of view is still the same wherever you turn your head.

But it's just my theory.

For to target thing, I think it will be a great device. I think TrackIR and Tobii EyeX could be complementary devices.

Eye tracking has been implemented in Assasin's Creed Rogue.

Did you manage to get the eye tracker working with Elite Dangerous? I got it a few days ago and I have no idea how to set it up with it

Anyone had any luck with this yet? Mine works fine om the PC, when I go to the supported games it finds ED and allows me to set toggles for on/off and re-centering but no effect in game, started the game a few times as it says that any changes in the games set-up will cancel but no joy as yet.

In game, go to your settings ---> Controls and scroll down to Headlook mode.
Set things as follows:

Mouse look: OFF
Mouse headlook invert :ON
Mouse sensitivity slider: All the way to left
Headlook default state: ON
Headlook button increments: Continuous
Headlook axis mode: Direct
Centre when headlook inactive: On
Headlook sensitivity: Slider all the way to left
Reset headlook: Empty
Look up: Empty
Look down: Empty
LOOK UP AND DOWN AXIS: (Joy Y-axis) Set by looking up or down, whilst the camera is tracking your eyes in the menu. Also the dead zone is set to all the way to left ( no dead zone) Personal preference, set as you want...
Invert axis: Off
Look left: Empty
Look right: Empty
LOOK LEFT AND RIGHT AXIS: Set by looking to left or right, whilst the camera is tracking your eyes in the menu. Also the dead zone is set to all the way to left ( no dead zone) Personal preference, set as you want...
Invert axis: Off

Infinite screen extension settings: Everything like browser controls off, don't know if these affect the game in anyway, but i just wanted to get the game to work, so...
In Infinite screen extension settings for Elite: Dangerous, set Speed to 10, Gradient to 1.00 and Dead zone to 0.01
In control features i set the Enable/Disable key to my mouse side button, so i can click it and the headlook is turned off. Activate it again by clicking the same button. Oh and mode is toggle. If toggle mode fails to work, try Hold to disable option...

Try these and report back, Please! I'll try and help more, if sentry is still giving you a hard time :)

Thanks for that reply ... had it mostly figured out but it was a bit sluggish from trawling the net and you tube, tried your settings above which were not too different than I had though a tad 'fast and twitchy'.. I think a tweak somewhere in-between will give me the best result, I'll post back tomorrow when I get time to fine tune the settings.

Also really interested in this for Elite and would like to hear the opinions of anyone who is a track ir user or head tracker user compared this eye tracker.

I have TrackIR and I like it a lot. All this talk of the EyeX has definitely piqued my interest. I can certainly imagine the advantages of eye tracking but at the same time I can also picture the downsides.

I haven't been able to find much information in Tobii's documentation as to what the Infinite Screen software actually does, although they mention that it ships with vJoy. I saw a guy on Youtube doing an unboxing and initial test of the EyeX and he complained that the headlook enabled by Infinite Screen conflicted with mouselook, which isn't the case with TrackIR.

The combination of those two factors leads me to suspect that Infinite Screen is effectively a workaround for lack of dedicated API support in the game, possibly converting inputs from the hardware into vJoy axes that the game can handle. I'm already doing quite a bit of vJoy stuff and I could see that being a problem for me. Voice Attack virtual joystick doesn't work for that precise reason.

Elite is compiled against the TrackIR API and supports it fully. Is that the case with the EyeX?

Of course the big downside with TrackIR is that because it tracks your head you end up having to look out of the corner of your eye when you turn your head, because the monitor is still in the same place. At first that's unintuitive, though it really doesn't take long to get used to it.

The bottom line being that I too would love to hear from someone who's used both gadgets.

Looks like Mr Ant just reviewed it :

Hello All. I'm trying to get the Steelseries Sentry working with Elite Dangerous Horizons and no luck yet.

I am running Windows 10. Firstly, I can't see any guidance on the web how to configure the Sentry to work with it ED.

So then I tried installing the Tobii software as at least there is some guidance on how to get that working, as above. However, when I try to run Infinite Screen Extension I get a 'could not initialise' message.

I'd appreciate any advice :)

you need the infinite screen software, detail here: http://www.tobii.com/xperience/apps/elite-dangerous/

also these may help: http://developer.tobii.com/communit...with-the-standalone-elite-dangerous-horizons/

I believe the 'could not initialise' message means you've run into the issue with incompatible USB3.0 ports - are yours using the ASMedia chipset? If so, try other ports - some motherboards have a combination of different types of USB3.0 controllers. Otherwise you may need to buy a separate add-in card that uses a different chipset

Thanks for the response. After reading this I moved the Sentry to one of the front USB 3.0 ports, and got a different message telling me to install Microsoft-6.3.9600.17031 drivers. Apart from the fact that these are Windows 8 drivers (I am on Windows 10), I'm not sure how I am supposed to identfiy on Device Manager which USB port matches which entry. I also still have no idea what the Sentry software equivalent is to the Infinite Screen Extender either.

So far I'm not impressed with this item! Tobii and Steelseries do not seem to have got their act together with software for the two products and are also relying on obsolete drivers.

DavelKence,
By the way, although infinite screen is not initialising, all the lights are on on the device, and the eye tracking and calibration is working on the EyeX software.

Does this still sound like the USB compatibility issue to you?

Cheers

Jon

Possibly not. I'd read on another thread somewhere that the message you were seeing occurred at calibration and this meant an issue with the USB ports. However I don't (yet) own the EyeX so have reached the limit of what I know. Best bet is to contact Tobii support directly - others who have taken the same route have said they are very prompt and useful.

Hope you get it sorted quickly

I've managed to make some progress but not quite there yet. I uploaded a different version of Infinite Screen Extensions (although with the same version number...) and have managed to install it.

I've set up the ED: Horizons details on the software as mentioned on the forum and I've changed the headlook setting in ED's control options.

However, although EyeXs gaze tracker is working as expected, the ED control panel won't recognise eye movements as axes. Also Vjoy has no activity. I've raised a ticket with Tobii, but right now their turnaround is slow. Does anyone have any ideas?
