Stellaris

An earlier point about the mid-game: Stellaris is at its best at both the early game and the late game, when a galactic crisis starts. In most other 4X games, the end-game is just mop-up time, where the match is already decided, but the crisis can alter the whole landscape. Currently, the earliest it can happen is 200 years in, which in my opinion is a bit late though. (Then it's rolled every five years, if it doesn't happen immediately.) The coming update will introduce a slider for this too, though.

Also, a fun fact that I recently learned about Awakened Empires (having been vassalized by Jingoistic Reclaimers): some twenty years after they are no longer being challenged (by either a crisis, or them not being the strongest empire yet), they'll start growing decadent. They'll start losing their bonuses, and given enough time, will start accumulating penalties to the point of not being much better than the Fallen Empires that they used to be. So if you can survive and build up until that time, you should be able to beat them and become independent.

Can you mid game expand the galaxy? I started out with kind of a medium galaxy, but I would like it to be bigger, however I don't want to start a new game as I'm getting some cool tech right now.

AFAIK no but unless you have a good computer I don't recommend it as it gets fairly laggy especially now that there is no limit to the naval capacity thus allowing fleets bigger than 1M power (or 700 battleships aprox).

Wow that is a lot of space ships......

Have a look on the workshop.
The game event script can add new systems, where might be a Mod that adds more systems mid game for just this occasion.

Ahh ok, didn't consider that option, thanks!

So, any one tried this one, any good?

I m an ES "fanboy" so to speak and stayed away from it out of principle. A lot of my friends have suggested it for me tho I was reluctant due to its heavy DLC business model. Not sure you get a quality product with the base game alone. That being said I took my chances and purchased the base game along with a throng of other stuff on the latest Humble Bundle. Tried it out once (roughly 1 hour) and am not impressed so far. Graphics are nice, I like how you can zoom in to see individual ships or out to watch the whole star system. I will admit that it might be due to me being a "newb" at it but it feels really "slow" when it comes to playing the game. Takes ages for anything to happen or complete.

It was only an attempt in the spur of the moment when I had some freetime on my hands so I didnt really pay too much attention to the tutorial nor worked myself into the matter. I ll watch some YT guides and other written guides before I give it another try.

More to come....

Space combat strategy isn't really the point of Stellaris or Endless Space, so you'll likely be disappointed if you buy it just for that.

That's more of a X4 game syndrome really. They all suffer from it in one way or another.

Sins of a Solar Empire might be more of an alternative in that case. Its not really a 4x but more of a RTS game but it has a pause function so it can basically be played like a 4x. It has a heavy focus on ships and space combat and only really rudimentary 4x traits (being empire development and research).

Me I m more in the "empire building" area so space combat and the warfare in these games is more of an annoyance for me. Accordingly I like to "turtle" a lot and play defensively if I can. All of these games tend to end up in a pure number crunch tho when you optimize your empire enough to support and sustain large fleets and make rapid progress in military tech....can as well use all that stuff if you have it already right? The getting from "zero to hero" at the beginning is what immerses and fascinates me the most. Pretty much all of these games throw initial ingame walls at you you need to overcome before you can shift your focus on battling your neighbours. Thats the time I enjoy the most.

I had the same issue with Endless Space 2, after 20 hours or so I feel no incentive to play it anymore. The unbalanced space battles did it for me mainly, but at the end I realized I like it more when the strategy is more 'down-to-Earth', i.e. once Civ6 with all expansions will be on sale, I'll scoop it up.

Stumbled across this thread too late but you still might have time to get Civ6+2 expansions in the humble bundle monthly sub program. It currently runs on its last fumes before the next month hits. Might be worth a look
