"Stolen" occupied escape pod???

That makes sense then. They have rescue insurance and their private service is already on the way to recover them. You are interfering in a sanctioned operation. What will they do when they turn up to find their clients have been shanghaied by some rando with impulse control issues? And what about the poor clients expecting to wake up in a first class recovery centre with champagne and rabbit slippers waking up in the hold of some potential murderhobo? ;)

By rescuing them at my expense, I'm helping them to keep their no-claims bonus. ;)

As a spacer who aspires to standards of professionalism, I would never dream of taking their pods out of stasis mode while on my ship. They're staying unopened, safe and plugged in for the entire journey back to civilisation. Besides, the last thing my crew and I would want are some confused rescuees getting under our feet on the trip home, complaining about the rations and the smell of onionhead.

I wonder how I managed to get stolen sensors and other stolen thargoid stuff?

As a general rule, sensors and probes found in space always get marked as stolen while ones salvaged from the ground are not.
Items left by the Orthrus may be different (legal salvage). Guess it's kind enough to use abandon instead of jettison.

The people in the “stolen” escape pods clearly haven’t paid their “insurance” to the Pilots Federation. How the heck is the PF supposed to stay profitable if individuals, businesses, minor factions, and superpowers don’t pay for our protection?

Search and rescue is a loss leader for the Pilots Federation. The real money is made elsewhere.
