Stop placing percentile requirements upon otherwise unobtainable Community Goal rewards

The Community Goal today, Deliver Critical Aid for the Rhea Disaster (discussion) has a special reward not seen since Azimuth goals in 3308. It is something in which I am—and many Commanders I know are—very interested. The trouble is:
  • We fire weapons at things, not deliver thousands of cargo units.
  • We would have to compete on cargo delivery to reach top 50%.
If it must be cargo then so be it, but these really ought to be a fixed contribution instead; deliver some specific amount of cargo, therefore get item. The participation-killer will be if it appears we could deliver cargo all week and still not get the item, in which case I can not possibly ask anyone even to try.

It is called a Community Goal—let it earn its name by appealing to everyone, rather than forcing some to estimate the threshold and perhaps decide it will be too much, cut losses and use the week for something else!

Competition -> FOMO -> Maximum engagement -> Better stats for shareholders -> Better stock price -> Improved company worth.

Expect it to get worse in the future.
Its not really anything to do with this.
I have no issue at all with % rewards, competition is a good thing, however many of us have Jobs and family's and whilst paint jobs etc is no biggy something that may prove extremely useful in the future should be available to all at a cost.
Recently Fdev have been brilliant at making sure 'required' modules are available to all, I'm hoping that continues.

Potentially, but if this cargo rack requires 20k hauled to reach the 50% mark. It could put off alot of players and reduce engagement, etc.
That's statistically unlikely, though. Top 50% for bubble trade CGs has never been above 10,000t and even for ones with high-value rewards at that threshold very rarely goes above 6,000t.

I suppose the question is whether a fixed 6,000t target would be more or less popular.

I suspect for anyone who actually needs the rack, the risk of not collectively hitting T5 at all is probably quite a bit more significant than the risk of not reaching 50% personally, on this one.

The first two steps, sure, even if not everyone finds that motivating - CG tier thresholds and overall participant counts do tend to end up higher where there's a relevant reward.

The last three don't follow, though.
3 -> 4: Frontier have virtually never presented active player counts for ED to (potential) shareholders, and the one time they did it was a "monthly active" count which was about 100 times higher than average weekly CG participation, so CG competition is barely going to make a dent in those numbers anyway. (Sure, it's public data via Inara, etc. so shareholders could use it but most of them are going to be considering more fundamental aspects of Frontier's business). Total sales figures are sometimes presented ... but anyone joining the game now/later has COMO (Certainty...) so it probably doesn't help with that.

4 -> 5: Frontier's share price has been pretty much uncorrelated with ED player activity levels throughout the game's history (one big drop in both after the Odyssey release aside) and that will probably continue. How well Planet Coaster 2 does will be a much bigger deal than a few hundred more players hauling fake aluminium for a week.

5 -> 6: Frontier isn't structured in such a way that its stock price affects the company's actual value (no loans secured on stock value, no dividend payouts, limited use of stock options for employees), and too many of the shares are held by David Braben and family (with a substantial chunk of the rest being held by boring pension funds and the like) for any other shareholder opinions to matter very much to the board.

We have not reached T1 yet for the CG and the 50% starts at 3826 (currently), I would not feel comfortable with only 6k hauled and wanting or needing the C6 anti corrosive rack for the war effort

No, this one is definitely looking like it might be more in the 10k range. (not 20k, though, I'm still fairly confident of that)

Thank you for the analysis! I am feeling now much better about getting a full wing to remain ahead of median, even if it is still much to ask of the entire Galaxy to remain ahead of reaching the reward tier.

Well, most decent rewards only need you to be in the top 75%, it's not clear why they've chose the top 50% for this one, immediately locking-out half of all contributors.

What they could do instead is put the cutoff at 50% of the median. That would currently be somewhat harder to reach than the top 75%, but it doesn't automatically shut people out, theoretically the entire bottom 50% of all contributors could attain 50% of the median.

Not to mention that those cargo racks should already be avaiable to all, but fdev lied.

It would have been better if this had finally been the cg that delivered what rhe last one promised, instead of this aid one, and with a lower threshold for completion than what this is, and the last one was.

I have noticed that the amount needed is based on number of contributors and the amount turned in, not "only half will reach the goal and be rewarded" If everyone turned in the same amount, they would all get the reward. If the people who turn in based on vanity or fear of not getting the reward, that will cause losers. If we all agree to turn in say 10K, then what would their algorithm do then? yeah the ones that go over might mess things up but if more than 50% of players turn in a set amount, what will they do?

This.

I am absolutely sure I can reach 50% in a day, but don't believe T5 will be reached.
That's why I'll stay on the burning Morrill Station under attack in HIP 18857, my level of AX proficiency :)

EDIT
...which just stopped being attacked.
Damn, these changes are quick.
