A 100 tonnes of cargo and with a fuel scoop I landed in an unscoopable sun and tank is empty. Dammit!
I guess to self destruct is the only option. Rebuy is about 400k. Any ships that can tow another ship? That would be quite a feature, huh?
Not a good situation.
When travelling a route that will require scooping, I scoop in every system on the way until I know I can make it all the way. If you feel uneasy at the ships nearby, bug out and try the next system, but if you keep it topped up, the scooping time and therefore risk will be minimised
When I know I am going to have to scoop on the way I check the map and find the nearest scoopable sun within solid route bar range (solid line is the range you can reach without refuelling and the dotted line is the jumps you cannot make without said refuelling)... and yes, I learned this the hard way.
To find out which suns are scoopable go to http://www.fenris.co.uk/elite/fuel-scooping-which-stars/ which makes it easier to figure out... Oh and the rhyme "Oh Boy, A Fine Girl Kissed Me!" that I found on that page works well too (the first letter of each word shows which types are scoopable).
Yup, I think we all probably fall for this problem at some time.
I always scoop at every star along the way that is scoopable, hasn't let me down so far in 4,000 LY <fingers crossed>
If you are getting to the lower end of your fuel tank, check the map and head for a scoopable, even if it's a bit of a detour. I slightly longer journey is better than the alternative.
