Strange sounds coming from outposts

Hi all

if it's been mentioned before then please link to any other threads.

Anyway, I saw a YouTube video where someone heard strange ghostly noises docked at an outpost but could not find anything and thought it was quite eerie. I logged in last night and left my pc booting up the game to get a cuppa. All of a sudden I hear the same thing - a sort of 'horn' sound that reminds me a bit of 'The War Of The Worlds'. I'm guessing it must be some sort of exhaust chimney but it's certainly an unexpected sound! Never heard it before and I've been playing since 1.2, any ideas?

Hi Bret,

ive heard this too, sounds a bit like an Air Raid Siren ?

Ive heard other weird stuff too, like a Whale type sound and something that sounds like air or gasses being vented at high pressure.

Heard the one's with a Bass beat too? Must be a night club in there somewhere with everyone tripping off of Onionhead!

Also what's with the ship wreckage on some outposts?

There's a couple of outposts in a system not far from Shinrarta Dezhra where I combat tested various ships in 1.5 beta. They both make foghorn-like sounds, or maybe it's scraping metal?

I think all the odd noises at outposts are the machinery spaces...remember, they're FAR smaller than a big orbital, so sound will travel through them much easier. And a lot of the noises sound like refinery or salvage equipment crushing rocks/metals.

Small point which spoils it for me is that you can hear these 'Machinery/Outpost' sound hovering above an outpost with no physical contact to the station, so how does that sound travel through a Vacuum??? Some outpost you can even hear music as you hover!!

Those outpost rave parties, man! Just because your nearest neighbour is 16ls away and separated by vacuum... The size of those speakers...

There are a few fancy outposts that have dance music coming out of them. One has a glass top and is like a show-room, with an Eagle, Python and Cobra on circular displays. "Come to Discount Bob's used Spacecraft Emporium! Have we got a deal for you, the 3302's are coming, so that means the 3301 model years HAVE GOT TO GO! We will not be undersold. Come to Hanley's Reach outpost for the best deals this side of Anlave!" In reality, you know they buy the wrecked Python's attached to some outposts and refurb them and roll back the Odometer

Even though it should be dead quiet, it makes for a better 'game' to have the ambient sounds. A pirate station I was at recently had all sorts of creaking and groaning of metal.. like just the act of existing was a strain on the supports. Very cool. Not as creepy as the Geiger counter on the SRV though.. at first I thought of Hudson with the motion tracker in the movie Aliens.. "There's movement all over the place.. their everywhere!!!"

EDIT: Ninja'ed re: the dance music

You can hear ships explode in space as well but I think the game mechanic for this is supposed to be the speakers in the pilots seat creates sensory input to match what's going on outside. May have dreamt that though!

Hey JP.

Others have talked about dance music too, I must have missed those outposts- can you remember where you saw it?

Please link to the video... I know some scientists that would be interested in hearing it.
Here you go pal:

58 seconds in is the sound I mean. Most of it is station creaking.

You didn't dream that, it's true. But this sounds very different, non human if I had to guess...

Exactly what I thought when I first heard it a few weeks ago - "The War of the Worlds" horn. That sound is so eerie, and singular, it's a trademark for that film.

Yeah they took the 'Ooo Laaah' from the 70's record and made it more badass!

On a slightly sad side note, that record STILL TO THIS DAY gives me the fear just like it did when I was a child. I don't get scared by much but that haunted me for years.... Still gives me goosebumps listening to The Eve Of The War.

I was alone making that cup of tea in a dark house with my amp powering my speakers when I heard that noise coming from the station.....

Swamp gas nothing to worry about:D

I do luv the feeling of remotness and ghostie sounds at these far off stations.
I keep looking out the cockpit window expecting zombie pirates to be cleaning my windshield:)

As for the party sounds with all the illegal narcotics/booze being smuggled to these places, no wonder;)

Thats the Orca. It actually sounds like a whale when its flying around nearby. :D
The other stuff tho yea most Outposts emit strange sounds when docked. has to do with the Soundengine that generates noises for all stuff thats in your sight (like planets, Stars, ships etc) alteast thats my guess. Sound in ED is just so awesomely good if you look (or hear, heh) a bit deeper into it.

Bret, no sir I can't remember where I was when I heard the Bass beats, but this guy found one........

you can't hear it very well untill the end, but the location details are in his description.

Also these odd sounding ones too......

the first thing I thought of when I first saw one of these outposts, was how it reminded me of a UA colours and sound.

Will check them out, thanks!

Yes I was thinking about the UA as well, should we give this thread to The Canonn?
