Struggling getting third-party apps in game

Hi guys - probably a million similar threads, so apologies for this one. I'm yet to find one which helps me.

All I want is to be able to get a third party app/website into the cockpit (EDCopilot). That is all I want. I'm struggling to get anything to work.

I've tried Desktop+, Daily OVR and OVR Toolkit - the latter actually seems to work on my PC, but can't see it in-game.

Tried running ED in borderless and windowed mode.

Steam
Quest 2 + cable
Win 11
4080 Super
32 Gig Ram

Maybe I just need a bit of hand-holding here. Any suggestions? Please and thank you.

I don't use any apps or 3rd party stuff but my suggestion would be to contact the app programmer?

The slightly clunky method I use for watching video streams in-cockpit:
  • Open the window you want in desktop view, selected from the standard Oculus taskbar.
  • Grab the window with your Touch controller and move it to where you want it.
  • Resize the window using the thumbstick while you have it grabbed.
  • Select “pin” in the bottom right corner of the window.
You now have that window open while you’re in Elite but you cannot interact with it until Alt+Tabbing to the window - at which point you lose all control of the game. Alt+Tab back to the Elite window to get control of the game back.

You absolute beauty!! Thank you very much!

Another option that I believe can be use with other games.... With a Quest 3 I use open composite to avoid steam VR. This meant doing without an in cockpit overlay EDCopilot. There is a new method to get the overlay back with the free app called OpenKneeboard.

Here is the link for installing:

EDCoPilot in a VR overlay with Oculus/Meta

This is looking promising!! Thanks for this - I completely missed this guide.

Now all I need is to be able to bring up a keyboard and I'm away. I can't believe there's no option to type using a joypad like the consoles.

Were you able to get it to work? because I talked to the manufacturer of the app but he reports that it should not work as Elite Use OpenComposite for VR and the program does not support it ?

That's odd as the user who posted claims success using this. I will ask them what their config is (and update the article). Sorry about that!

Yeah, I could never get it to work with OpenComposite either, but there is someone here who did get it to work in another thread (I forget which); they shared their settings but it didn't help me. TBH, I could never get it to work reliably with SteamVR and Elite either. I tend to use voice tools or go flat screen for essential screen tools like materials helper.

yes anyway what in the beginning seemed not to work works and also quite well for steam users it works, for oculus users like me who start the game from epic games you have to do a few things, I put opencoposite and removed the openxr runtime to oculus (which complains that I don't use his) but at that point the VR game no longer starts from epic is from there VD virtual desktop comes to the rescue by starting from there the game is fine, a special thanks goes to CMDR Grunty for the patience and suggestions given to me, and to the creator of the program who also assisted me.

It's not that it 'should not work'; if OpenComposite makes Elite Dangerous act as a conformant OpenXR 1.0 or 1.1 game, it 'should' work. There are no known issues.

I don't provide help for OpenComposite because every time I have investigated issues where third-party mods have been involved, it has been a bug in the third-party mod or a mis-configuration of the third-party mod, so I am no longer willing to spend my free time investigating issues when third-party mods are present - unless there is evidence showing the incompatibility is caused by a bug in OpenKneeboard. "They don't work together" is not evidence of a bug in OpenKneeboard, and this stance is not specific to or caused by OpenComposite.

It's times like this I hate MS for giving up on WMR. I just said 'Start' to get the WMR Start Menu and clicked on any app or window I wanted to appear inside a VR session and then pin it over a cockpit bulkhead. Was a nice way to watch a film or YT on deep space trips. Considering it was such basic functionality in WMR from outset, there must be a neater way of doing this with OpenXR but, other than kneeboard which is very clunky by comparison ( IMO ). I can't think of an obvious way currently.
