SUGGESTION - Choice of Ship for Docking Practice

What do you think CMDRs?

Personally, I don't have problems docking - once I get fully immersed, I seem to have a heightened sense of spacial awareness somehow and it just all makes sense to me...

But I often read about the problems some of you have with the big boys toys :D

I can't see why this couldn't be easily patched in for the Docking Scenario in Training Missions.

Can't say I have ever had a problem even with the big ships I have had, sometimes scrape the top of bottom (in the Anaconda or Cutter). Never tried the Beluga. My favourite ship to dock at full speed is the FDL. :)

I think the OP's suggestion - which I also think is a good one - would be to allow the player to choose which ship to practice docking with to get them used to docking with bigger vessels without fear of costly accidents.

I'd go with the Type-9, it's big, but has plenty of space to get it a little wrong, plus the handling is so slow and heavy you have to think about what you're doing in advance . . . perfect for a large-ship docking trainer IMHO :)

I vociferously made my opinions about the so-called training portion of the game known shortly after launch - in short - rubbish.
It needs a major overhaul but its probably not someone's big priority so it wont get done.

The whole thing is pretty basic, very limiting and id nothing really to help me play the game. One solid positive point i have for the training is that i did learn the six axis but thats it.

I would og even further than your suggestion and say that what they need is a simulated bubble - doesn't have to be big - maybe 15 systems. They courld pick 15 systems around LAVE - wouldn't that be fun and nod to the past! if they could clone the 15 systems off the BGS when you launch the game and then you could just mooch about getting to learn how to play the game without your interactions going back into the BGS (somehow....?). The beginning players could just mooch and try out everything. Give them an unlimited purse, and a sniff of every ship and most mission types and away you go. Much more useufl IMO.

I used to advocate for a mode, solo CQC or some such, where you had a limited area to test out any ship's flight model. After going through a handful of betas, getting whatever ship I wanted to "try" I kinda wish I never did that. I feel it cheapened that moment when I first launched the Imperial Cutter. Being a pinacle ship, to me, it didn't nearly have the same excitement I had when I got my first Clipper. I attribute that mostly to having flown it a bunch in beta.

So, on one side, I understand the obvious practicality but, on the other side, my feels :p

Meh, once you can go thru the slot doing 500m/s without exploding you can dock anything. First time flying the Conda I didn't even hit the slot on the way out. It's all about remembering which ship you're in and how close that canopy needs to be. On a Conda that canopy should feel like it's about to hit the top on the way out. On the Dropship bodies that canopy needs to be low as can be. Something like a Vette keep her somewhere in the middle top.

Landing involves two items. The first is getting through the slot in either direction and the second is due to the various sizes of ships, the landing gear placement is different. Unlike the small ships, medium and larger ship must to some degree, set there nose higher than the rear before locking can take place. The Beluga, Conda and Vette have slightly different space landing gear and thus the degree of pitch is slightly different between them.

Fully agreed. The choice of ship should be limited to something in your current fleet I guess - this way, you'll be practising in your own ships with their current configuration.
