Dissenting opinion:
Most games have a
final boss / big bad (warning: tv tropes).
ED breaks that convention, except..
its main adversary is the scale and opacity of the galaxy the player inhabits.
It's up to the players to discern how things work, and the game doesn't treat them with kid gloves.
You can see it as "bad design", unintentional consequences of focusing almost all development budget on gameplay, or a radical design masterstroke, whatever.
Either way, it's a definite attraction for me. What could be more immersive than not knowing how the universe you live in actually works?
