At the moment we have the ships made by various manufacturers:
Core Dynamics - Eagle / Imperial Eagle / Federal Assault Ship / Federal Corvette / Federal Dropship / Federal Gunship / Vulture
Faulcon DeLacy - Anaconda / Cobra MkIII / Cobra MkIV / Python / Sidewinder / Viper / Viper MkIV
Gutamaya - Imperial Courier / Imperial Clipper / Imperial Cutter
Lakon - Asp Explorer / Asp Scout / Diamondback Explorer / Diamondback Scout / Keelback / Type-6 / Type-7 / Type-9
Saud Kruger - Orca
Zorgon Peterson - Adder / Fer-De-Lance / Hauler
And having different manufacturers gives the ships some personality.
At the moment, they all use parts that are universal, in that, a Frame Shift Drive (FSD) is a FSD is a FSD and can be used in any ship. This is like taking a Ferrari engine and fitting it into a Mercedes car with no problems. I am sure the engineers here could go into detail about that, but I am sure that a Ferrari engine is best used in a Ferrari car.
Now imagine if the module parts had manufacturers. You would dock at a station to upgrade your FSD in your Lakon Asp Explorer, only to find they only stock Faulcon DeLacy and Zorgon modules. Now, maybe you *could* fit a Faulcon FSD in your Lakon Asp, but it wouldn't work as well. Or maybe you find that the Faulcon FSD won't fit in your Lakon Asp, but you could fit a Zorgon FSD, but it's not very good.
This would add a layer to the game that could make it slightly more complex, but also allow the devs to put in secret easter eggs. Let's say you fit a module from every manufacturer, you suddenly have a temporary rainbow paintjob that only shows while you have those specific parts fitted. Or maybe if you fit a Lakon FSD with Zorgon Thrusters and Faulcon Power Plant in a Saud Orca, you suddenly get a slight or significant jump range boost.
The module manufacturers don't even have to be the same ones that make the ships.
So what would it take to make this happen? a bit of coding I suppose, as I always underestimate how much work is involved in these things, but I think the effort and work required would be worth the extra depth it would add. Just my opinion.
I'd like to see it happen, and if you would too, then how about we campaign to get Frontier to consider it?
