Newcomer / Intro Super Cruise Speed when Target or Not Target speed control

Ok, I have already figured out 75% fixed button makes for the best super cruse speed when approaching most targets, (cept for planets, seems to be 50% until low orbit...)

What I am a little lost on, is, if you do get "Slow Down", you can't, however, if you unlock your target, you can immediately drop to 30.0 minimum speed. (unless your gravity locked, but this isn't about that, I can tell the difference between these at least)

So, my question is, why does having a target locked in super cruse screw up speed control?

As a part 2: 'unlocking' a target seems to be only able to be done from the panels, which is a hassle when your looking where your going, would be faster/easier/better if there were a mapping for it. Is there a better way to do that?

Thanks.

I don't think there is. I think it's difficult to change cruise targets like that on purpose to prevent people slowing down quickly if they overshoot.

What game-play reason would that be a purpose for? All I could see for that is an advantage for an aggressor, and I don't see NPC's appear to fly by the rules anyway. (looking at you magic spinning triangle comets!)

It's quite simple. If you don't have a target, you can accelerate and decelerate freely.
If you have a target locked, you're on cruise control. Keep your throttle in blue zone and everything's dandy. Don't and bad things happen. :D

The overshoot system can be quite fun when you get the hang of it. You can gravity-break around planets and use the sling to put yourself on the other side of the station (i.e against your potential attacker)

The only other ways that I am aware of are:
- manoeuvring away from the target (i.e. pitch up 20 degrees or so) and then targeting empty space
- using headlook to look away from the target and then targeting empty space
- if you have a route plotted, using the 'target next system on route' binding (obviously you will now have a system targeted instead of the starport, which may be sub-optimal depending on circumstances, but it's another option)

"slow down" means that you're being slowed down by a gravity field, not that you need to slow down.

The confusion about this certainly in my mind comes from the fact that usually you only see this message as you are approaching your targeted destination so it makes sense that it is an instruction. However you can also see it at almost any point in cruise if you fly into a deep enough gravity well.

Ahhh, That helps!!

Yea, this I figured out, makes me think of Picard when he wrapped the Enterprise round that asteroid. This I like.

System is still strange.

You can unlock a target with the same command you use to lock a target. I often throttle down and unlock my destination station when below 1000mm, when unlocked you can choose the supercruise drop out distance.
