Larger ships that require unloading/loading, the are NPC and player flown, not owned hired for large wing missions, mainly unarmed maybe just point defence, a signal of systems in Boom and a way to quickly react to BGS situations.
Maybe captained by persistent NPC's who you gain rep with and can call to your system when in need????

They use compressed cargo so dropping one block is worth 10-25tons when pirated.
Longer journeys for more chance of defending and attacking freighters.
Capitol ships style jumps from nav beacons again more time to defend etc.

These larger ships would give a system a feeling of being high wealth and also add more group play.

Not going to happen. I don't think people would like the idea a large ship could buy out a station of goods.

Then the complaint we would see. I can't dock my Super Freighter, or why can't other ships work the same way so they don't have to dock. They need to make the station bigger.
 
Yeah too easy to use to influence the economy and FD are seriously worried about that, often giving it as the main reason for refusing to allow players to store commodities.
 
I actually like the idea.

if it’s BGS influence have them ship stuff that isn’t available on Market - Cheese, FSD drives, Or even NPC ships. So it’s a pick up and deliver mission, where you need to have coordinated wing to protect it and load/unload it.

Or maybe it’s an automated flight ship that travels between locations, via the Nav beacons and to star ports, but it only leaves once a player wing mission is accepted?

Adds to the bustle of the galaxy, plus maybe it is the method that ship transfers are performed, now with a player interaction that can’t break BGS and another focus for Piracy? You could have missions from some factions to attack and destroy certain modules as well, rather than defend it!
 
yeah the BGS idea was just thrown in but to add a bit of bustle and also more piracy options would be great
Sometimes it feels like the galaxy is full of belugas and an occasional hauler. Not really what you'd expect to be transporting cargo for billions of people.
 
I like the idea! It would be fun to get a mission where you have to escort something like a super freighter, make sure something is defended as it drops in and out of supercruise. The mission could fail if the freighter takes x amount of damage or loses y amount of cargo.
 
Funny, escort missions are usually the most hated mission in most games, can't see the attraction of plodding along besides something (that has to be set to go slow so that rubbish players can keep up) while waiting for enemies to show up so you can pick them off all the while hoping the AI doesn't do something to get itself killed after you wasted half an hour of your game time keeping it alive......
