Newcomer / Intro Surface base woes.

G'day all.
Does anyone have some info or guide to raiding higher level surface facilities? Had a mission to scan a datapoint of a ++ level facility and came across multiple energy field barriers, base generators and public datapoints. I'd lured the air support away and had destroyed every turret and skimmer in sight by the end but still had no real idea of the significance of the countdown timers that went off after scanning some datapoints or which scanner I really needed.
Also with ground ops, does anyone know how the scanner works in the SRV? Does it just look pretty or can you actually find things by looking at it?
I've had a look through other threads but there are SOOO many to search through.
Thanks.

I find the scanner pretty useful in the SRV.
As you approach the base the first things that appear are the defence turrets.
These appear as white squares on mine.
If you then go into the Contacts tab it will tell you what they are.

If there are skimmers then they will show up as you get closer.

You should also find that as you approach a crash site then the canister and contents etc should show up, but you have to be pretty close to them.
Again check them out in Contacts.

After you leave your ship then your mothership appears in the radar as a green blob to help you find the way back.

Certain types of rock also appear as white blobs. These you can blast and collect the bits.

So yes you can find things, but the range is limited.

They may be other uses that I haven't come across yet. I'm still a newbie.

Those bases have several types of data points, and some of them are behind barriers, others are openly accessible.

Some of them are "Public". Scanning them does not provoke a hostile reaction. However, for some bases, those public data points are inside restricted areas, and entering one of those will provoke a hostile reaction :D. Since I usually don't do these datapoint missions (I don't like being shot at...), I can't tell you which ones are the mission datapoints.

However, with those public datapoints and the countdown: The bases usually have multiple public datapoints, and you have to scan them all while the countdown is active in order to "establish the connection" and receive your reward (moderate to rare data packages). Scanning any of these datapoints will start the countdown, scanning the next will add an additional delay to the countdown. These delay vary between 2 minutes and 30 seconds per datapoint scanned.

In short: http://wavescanner.net/

That site might be outdated, but it should give you some basic idea. Any type of surface resource has a specific signature - in the scanner image and the scanner sound. And the direction on the scanner shows you the direction of the resource. The further away it is, the wider (and weaker) the indicator will be. You get a problem when you get overlapping sources within the scanner range. Then, a resource further away might mask out a close resource - and vice versa.

Once you've got to grips with that, you'll run into the practical problems: the signature for metallic meteorites (best you can get) is very hard t distinguish from the signature for outcrops (basically dross).
