Surface/sub surface mining pointless

So just spent an hour doing surface/sub surface mining, didn't find any core roids so guessing it's a lottery in finding them. But how disappointing are these mining points. Surface provide 1 rock per deposit and sub surface gets you about 2 deposits, not really worth it, especially when mining lasers will provide you with a lot more ore over time. After an hour I had around 10t cargo worth around 70k, using just mining lasers I would probably have a least 500k in cargo within a hour. So I'm guessing only core mining is really worth it at the moment.

If you obtain a single Void Opal you can sell it for over 1.6 million.

Indeed.

It's worth for missions only (when supporting a faction, seeking rep or looking for mats rewards), not for the Cr.

Related question - if I just want to "blow apart asteroids" and get the goodies inside, what tools do I need?

1) Seismic Charges
2) Abrasion Laser (surface deposits on the inside of a blown-up Asteroid, effectively doubles the tonnage gained from blowing it up)

Detonating the Seismic Charges typically nets 10-15 fragments, the Abrasion Laser afterwards nets another ~10-12 from the inside of the Asteroid pieces.

PS.
I've rarely ever done pure Surface Deposit Mining, even more rarely SubSurface Deposits.
The SubSurface Missile hence has already started disappearing from my Mining builds.
I'd rather carry one more Weapon for self-defense, especially since Weaponized Hardpoints have become a bit of a rare, precious good on Mining Ships due to having to carry all the other stuff already.

To add to this, the abrasion blasters can be used in numbers on some ships and if you hit with multiple blasters you get multiple mats come out. So a Cobra four with three abrasion blasters can create three extra units out of what otherwise would only be one. The Asp can do it with four. They have to hit at the same time though.

If that’s what you’re doing, seek out the Void zonal hotspots. They make the most credits mining. A single Opal nets you over 1.65 million at the right station.

Can I get away without using prospector limpets, or will that nerf the yield like the old system used to work?

Oh? +1 for that.
Is that intended behavior? Or will it be gone by the time I arrive in my T10 with 40 blasters?

I've read that - but AFAIK that's an acknowledged Bug.
Haven't read any statement whether this is being officially called an Exploit - but for all I know that behavior is unintended.

Hence, I've never equipped more than a single Abrasion Laser.

(edit, sry, wrong answer)

No, for deep core mining you need to use prospector limpets. They'll expose the fissure you'll need to granade the roid.
(Or I'm doing it wrong, which could well be the case...)

Not sure if bug. Doesn’t feel bugged but might be. Right now it works and it works reliably.

You need them. For a Void Opal miner you will want
Charges
Abrasion blasters
Wave scanner
Deep Surface Scanner
Collector limpet controller
Prospector limpet controller
Refinery
A bit of cargo space
Shields (the blast will damage your ship otherwise and you will bump into stuff when positioning for abrasion blasts).

Good point about the shield. First thing I deep cored mined was a re-buy screen :(

You can do without collector limpets, but since the roid peaces stay pretty close together, pooper scooping all the juicy bits will be a drag.

You need them.

Forgive me, but define "need". I don't "need" prospector limpets to mine the old fashioned way (lasers), but obviously they make mining much more profitable. I also don't "need" collector limpets. Do I truly "need" them, or do I just "want" them to maximize yields?

No, for deep core mining you need to use prospector limpets. They'll expose the fissure you'll need to grenade the roid. No fissure == your seismic charges don't know where to go == an empty bag.

not done much mining,
but in a multicrew session with a friend,
we found painite asteroids that could be blown up.

all surface, subsurface and core nodes had been painite.
probably the oldschool mining laser would have generated a few more painite junks too.

i would mine more often again if such "pure" rocks wouldn't be that seldom for any resource out there.
