Surface/sub surface mining pointless

Yeah, I stopped to go hunt materials as I’m low on those but earned several hundred million amounting to the bulk of my 1.2 billion credit balance. It’s not RNG.

Yup, I would suspect if you are looking in a bad location, then yeah you won't find any, but if you use probes to find hotspots you'll find plenty.

We'll disagree to disagree. Its actually great that mining now gives so many options. [up]

Excellent! BTW, I ment ice mining was a waste... But anyway, like I told Stealthie, I don't mean to tell you how to play/enjoy... Do so to your hearts content! Because enjoying the game is what it's about! Happy New Year!

Kind of related, I guess plain ol' luck is worth considering too.

I had a quick "look" at mining void-opals earlier.
Went in my AspX, with 64 limpets, started off around 30km from the hot-spot marker, headed toward it, past it and carried on going until I was around 100km out.
Didn't see a single 'roid I could core-mine.

It doesn't help that my prospectors seem to top themselves somewhere underneath my ship roughly 25% of the time but I must've probes around 40 'roids (and eyeballed at least twice as many on top of that) and the whole thing was a bust.

Given that belts are (apparently) persistent now, I can't even blame it on the RNG.
I was just looking in the wrong place, I guess.

If you're relying on core mining, there's always the chance you're going to come up completely empty (if you're me, at least).
In that case, at least mining lasers can help you cover your costs, if nothing else. [sad]

Good point on the usefulness of the mining laser. On a side note, this other thread could prove helpful in recognising asteroids that can be cracked: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/469104-Screenshots-of-core-rocks-next-to-non-core-rocks

And to you, Commander! [smile]
