Surround headphones or not - with the new audio tech in game

Looking to buy either the HyperX Cloud or the HyperX Cloud II

The former is cheaper but the latter has surround.

Do I need surround now ED has its own software tech built in?

Is the HW surround better than software?

Thanks!

I can't get a full set of speakers so i can only go headphones.

So I could get the cheaper hyper? I wouldn't notice the difference?

For Elite only

Thanks

Hey dude. I picked up the HyperX Cloud II a couple of weeks ago. I use the USB 7.1 dongle it comes with, and in my opinion, the sound is fantastic. You can tell where all the sounds are coming from, and all in all just sounds nice. Good for music too. I listen to Hutton Radio pretty much non-stop when on my PC.

The headset is, in my opinion, totally worth it.

I recently read a german article about surround sound headphones physics.

The inner ear is able to boost certain frequencies up to 18 dB. But these frequencies vary very much from person to person. They said about 20% of users can hear the surround effect and the others not. The headphones would have needed to be tuned to the user in order to recognize the effect.

I have a pair of surround sound headphones but I could not hear the effect. So I went back to stereo. I suggest you find a way to test if you are one of the lucky ones who can hear the effect.

Awesome news!

Do I need to keep Elites DTS X on or off to get the most out of the HyperX Cloud II. Soz for being a noob!

Absolutely! Buy both, test them, return the ones you dont like and say their not fit for purpose.

That purpose being EXPLORATION.

Good sound is essential while EXPLORING.

And when we get more tools and content for EXPLORATION it will be awesome.

EXPLORATION!

Using my old trusty AKG K272HD and wouldn't trade them for any gaming audio gimmick. Nothing beats a good pair of stereo ears from somebody who actually knows how to make one.

Some people will disagree, but in my opinion there is no such thing as surround headphones. Get a decent soundcard and studio stereo headphones from AKG or Beyerdynamic.

Exactly this , surround headphones are just a gimmick. A proper soundcard and a good pair of tins will be a much better choice, I've been using a Xonar DG soundcard with a relatively cheap(ish) pair of headphones (samson sr850) and when playing FPS games i could easily distinguish which direction a sound was heard (sometimes how far away). I tried them on elite and there are alot of sounds which i hadnt really noticed while using speakers , even the boom of a missile hitting a hull is a joy.

Do you have any whine issues/background noise problems with USB power delivery. I have had several supposedly 'high end' USB headsets and because I have sensitive hearing way beyond my years (age and it's negative corre to high freq noises) It was so irritating I have had to stuff them all in a wardrobe and get a decent sound card and wired set. I was looking at the Cloud II because the experience with the prev wired iteration was fantastic but the thought of more audio over USB makes me grit my teeth.

Can you hear anything, if so does it irritate or can it be 'tuned out'/ignored?

Thanks for all the replies.

Regardless of the stereo vs HW surround debate the hardware surround HyperX Cloud II I have just bought spank on my old pair! So I am very happy. I just want to get the most out of them.

@audiophiles:

I am confused. What setting should I set ED's in game audio setting too? Normal, Full Range?

Also, should Elite's software surround DTS X be set to off or on if you are using headphones with hardware surround; these headphones have a built in soundcard to power the HW surround e.g. HyperX Cloud II?

Thanks :)

Often surround headsets are simply doing something like what ED now can do on its own, you can get the 'sense' of surround sound, but there are still only 2 speakers, two audio sources, but I've tried the new sound system with my standard run of the mill, mobile headset, and it sounds very believable.

I should stress I'm no audiophile. This is the first time I have used this type of headset.

My opinion is just that: an opinion.

I would recommend trying to get a test done at a shop or something before you buy. My ears are not your ears.

I have good hearing and the Sony Gold 2.0 wireless Surround Headset. I hear the surround sound and it's amazing compared to Stereo. I can tell when things are behind/above/below me. Very useful in Battlefield.

You can pick the Sony headset up for about £50 if you shop around. I have 2, because it works so well. The Surround works on PC too, contrary to popular opinion. You just alter a setting in the sound setup.

Buy what YOU want and ignore the rest of us. [up]

One speaker pressed against or in each ear. It's called stereo (if it's a separated stereo signal). The rest is just smoke and mirrors.

Sound scapes and quality however, differ hugely. A nice sound card and good cans. Don't fall for the nonsense. :)

Just to be clear; 7.1 headphones can sound great. They just have nothing to do with 7.1, or surround for that matter.

I got a pair of HyperX cans a while back and have been pleasantly surprised by the quality of the sound and their reasonable (passive) sound-insulation.

Better sound quality than my active noise cancelling Sony headphones - these sound quite thin to me.

I was amazed at how much sonic detail there is in ED when I first played on headphones - it's well worth a go if you haven't yet tried it.

Yeah these cans are like night and day compared to my old ones.

Just did some research. They are virtual surround. So, I can just compare EDs virtual with the HyperX built in. :)
