Swearing in game

Swearing works fine for me when it's more naturalistic or conversational, like in cutscenes for military games, or the lovely denizens of the GTA games. It would probably come off badly in the kind of text I expect to see in Elite, though, which will probably be more functional and respond to basic questions.

NPC: I'll pay 800 f******g credits for passage to Zaonce
Player: Why so much?
NPC: There's this ****hole, Jimmy the Fiddler, who's set me up. I'm innocent, but that m***********r told the cops I'm drugrunner. Can you f*******g believe it? So we might have a leetle bit of trouble from the law.
Player: How many of you are there?
NPC: It's just me, and shipment of statues of the Virgin Mary. Who are you, f******g Poirot?

I'm afraid swearing is generally a result of limited vocabulary
I used to think the same. Then I realised that not swearing was actually limiting my vocabulary.

Nah... swearing is the result of hitting your thumb with the hammer! Universal, is that!
Alas, you remain unreppable.

The fact is, some people are offended by certain words. Therefore, those words need to be avoided if you do not want to offend anyone. Personally, I find the invasion of peoples privacy, the erosion of peoples civil liberties or the inequality of peoples opportunities to be more offensive than some anglo-saxon words but the world is as it is and it is not going to change anytime soon.

I found that a bit lame TBH. Use the proper words or don't bother !
<nods> That is my opinion too. I'd be interested to know if the official fiction writers have had any guidance on swearing? I think Drew started a thread ages ago concerning swearing in fiction.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.

:D

Indeed. And bring on the cursing, imho. As with any spice it can be over used, but done correctly it's a great flavor enhancer.

I don't have any magic answers to this guys. I don't think dropping the F bomb every 3rd word should happen. But I don't like censorship and I find there are times when cussing is the correct response and I realize it happens in times of passion. I'm guilty of that for sure. Yes I believe most of the people here are adults but there will be some kids playing and some of you plan on playing with your kids too. I kind of like the suggestion that voice chat would be adult only and typing would use filters. That's the best solution I've seen so far. It is EXTREMELY difficult to make everyone happy, in fact it's impossible. I hope Someone from Frontier reads this thread and figures out a moderately workable solution. Bottom line, I will live with their decision because I want to play the game, period. ;)

I just hope that any kind of blanking filter can be turned off.

Substitutions I'll leave it alone (or not, if it's feyu), but 'Shoot the ***** in the *****!' type text I always find jarring.

I find that swearing increases my thresholds for a variety of functions - anything from performance under stress to pain tolerance. However, swearing all the time negates it's usefulness and even stops being funny.
I also think the most effective insults are achieved when a higher register of articulation is used rather than generic vulgarities.
I'm not keen on censorship but it's probably a necessary evil.
