Sweaty Headrest

I've got the Oculus Rift S, and now that hot and humid summer is here, the "pillow" that rests against my forehead is getting sweaty and gross. How do you folks clean this? I don't see a way to detach it - is there? Do I use soapy water, or something else? As this "pillow" wears over time, can it be replaced?

In the meantime I guess I'll be inserting a padding of paper towels between my sweaty head and my Rift, which seems silly but hopefully will do the trick. Any advice is welcome!

Anti-bacterial wipes..... Just the basic "multi-surface" wipes that you get in the supermarket (if they are in stock - which is the difficult thing these days!). At my supermarket, they come in packs of 120.

You can wipe the headband, the head strap, and the face surround with them. Wipe the surfaces repeatedly (until thoroughly damp), then allow to fully dry before using the headset again.

Also - when I don't need total immersion, I unclip and remove the face-surround for ventilation. - That gives me a sort of half way house between total VR and still having most of it, and in particular, the situational awareness... It also gives an easier peek around the edge, for when I need to view a web browser (on an adjacent macbook)

You can buy 3rd party washable cloth covers. I use them on the Oculus CV1. Buy two; one on the headset, one in the wash. I also wipe down the headbands with a dry tissue every time I have finished a session. I am bald so the headstraps do get a bit greasy if not looked after. Every so often I also get the urge to clean the headset with isopropyl alcohol.

on my cv1 I replaced the padded cover with a third party cloth one, far better in the heat (more comfortable too)
the frame the pillow is on is removable, so can be replaced.

Would one of the current anti-flu cloth face coverings do, just shoved up onto your forehead? Might need longer string around your ear lugs though.

Personally I would rock one of these bad boys, it’s been several hundred years since they were last in fashion so VR might just be the impetus they need to get them back in the mainstream :)

I can really recommend the thin cloth covers from VR cover, I have them on my CV1. Sometimes the cover comes off near the nose and needs to be reattached, but I find it improves comfort a lot. They are even washable! I haven't tried the thick padded ones for the Rift/Rift S, but I have them for my Quest and it's definitely an improvement for me.

I find I get spots on my nose and cheeks, where my reverb makes contact with more oily parts of my face, side effect of VR Gaming when it's warm but then the reverb pads are not cloth. ..Maybe I should keep a balaclava in the fridge.

I too keep the anti-bacterial wipes, the ones for babies butts since the most delicate skin is on our faces ergo I make sure nothing with petroleum products or alcohol never goes near it. The plastic covered pads of the reverb will be prone to degrading over time I fear after contact with such products.

This is what worries me. I normally use rubbing alcohol for things like my K&M, but I think that might "eat" the foam behind the cloth head-cushion. Alcohol is wonderful at breaking down oils, which is the real problem with a sweaty head (water just evaporates).

Ewww!

The real issue is the bacteria that transfers with the sweat then festers.. Treat the bacteria and that treats a bulk of the unpleasantness. If the sweat and therefore the bacteria has reached the foam inside, then I suppose the treatment needs to as well :/

The link below is the datasheet for the product that I use. The link is to a pdf file (external link - from the website of what appears to be a manufacturer who supplies several UK supermarket chains - the website was listed on the product packaging from own-brand packaging of a major UK supermarket, so should be as trustworthy as such a file can be).

Of course replacement fittings/covers my help in future. I've not tried any yet.

I'd message MalicVR, I remember him saying recently on twitch he had bought replacements for his riftS for the same reason.

I use the VR Covers product on my Rift S too. They are pretty good and come in a pack of two from memory. They also have a cover for the whole headset to protect the lens when not in use.
