Say my ship has a 6 point slot for the power plant and a 5 for the FSD. Can I trade slots and get a 6 point FSD and a 5 point power plant?

No, core slots are specialised. As in putting an axle into the motor compartment of your car, and the car where the axle was meant to go, wouldn't work.

It would be cool if FD would add changing core sizes to the engineering line up.
