Switching my Python to combat spec, what to upgrade first?

I currently have a Python kitted for trade (heres the build currently) http://www.edshipyard.com/#/L=605,,2-A0A07_72A0A08I,0AA0AA0AA08c08c0727Pw05U03w
and I'm going to make this my pvp/pve combat spec http://www.edshipyard.com/#/L=605,5...,2-B69Y7_6uB69Y8I,7UI7jw7jw7iM7iM4_w05U05U03w
(the group I play with I am the heavy weapons vessel, so I don't need a wake scanner, interdictor. I also rp for the federation only so no need for a kws)

I'm just wondering which I should upgrade first, PP, Thrusters, PD, ect? I will be doing so incrementally to make sure my power resources are properly managed (ect. go to a 7d pp then 7a, ect.)

In my opinion, if you expect to get any working weapons on that thing, the first thing you'll need is a decent powerplant!

I'd recommend 7D as a start (about 2 mill).

Here's my current build, it's a bit of an all-rounder..

Python

And I'm still fiddling with upgrades!

Hope you're flush, it's gonna be pricey... :D

3 large gimballed pulse lasers, 7A power distributor, 5A shield generator. Upgrade the power plant only to support that, if you still have power left over, bolster the shields with shield boosters. :)

Just been doing same as the OP, kitting my Python out for combat from trading.

Currently gone for 1 large beam laser to take down shields and 2 large and 2 medium multicannons for taking down hulls. Haven't tested in a RES yet against large ships.

Ah excellent, thank you guys, I will do the PP first, should i go for the PD or thrusters next you think? (im going to take my 35 mil and do a very basic weap loadout so i can stop the trade grind and have some fun in an res site for awhile I think :D )

My Opinion varies.

First upgrade should be the distributor. Faster Shields, weapons, and boost capabilities.
Then the powerplant, then some decent weapons.

If you find that you're taking a lot of damage then drop down a class or two on your weapons and pick up a nice booster, generators, and some SCB's

Power Distributor before thrusters, definitely (this goes for every ship, btw. You need that power distributor to fire your weapons for as long as possible).

Why would you put a 5A shield generator on the Python when it has three Class 6 internals? A 6D gives almost the same shield, weighs 4t less, takes 1200KW less power and most importantly costs 600k instead of 5 million

There are actually large Multicannons? I thought class 2 are the highest available?!

This. I've just been up-grading my Python too for combat.
Noticed a MASSIVE improvement when I finally went to class A Power Distributor. Weapons seem to do a lot more damage, fire for longer and recharge quicker.
Better thrusters were nice, but you need to ensure you can hit hard and take punishment first. Shield Boosters are a lot cheaper than class A shields so my setup is:

I'm now on 7C PP, 6B Thruster, 7A Distributor, 6A Sensors and 6B Shield, with 3 A0 Shield boosters and 3 5A 5A 4A Shield Cell Banks.
All that with twin Large Gimballed Beams, twin Medium Gimballed Cannons and a large Gimballed Cannon.
This will tear through any NPC ship in seconds in a RES.
Total build cost (not inc. Founders discount) 104.6 mil.

Definitely this, and also the Python isn't as power-hungry as more dedicated combat vessels, so it's not essential to prioritise the power plant - plus the A-rated version costs nearly as much as the ship itself.

If i ever get the permit to go to the Founders system. Should i sell all my weapons and modules? Then refit my python at the founders system.

Don't see the point of multicannons on a ship this big. The beams will eat anything up to a Cobra with ease on their own. Cannons are better against bigger ships than multicannons.

for long duration farming I roll with 5 pulse lasers. 2x gimbled large, 1x fixed large, and 2x fixed meds. For internals I'm running a 6a shield generator, 2x 6a cell banks, 32 cargo hold, +240 hull upgrade, 1x 4b cell bank and then scoop/scanner/autohull rep to fill the rest. For the utilities I'm running 3x 3a shield booster, and a heat sink. With mainly A ship internals and the reinforced hull upgrade (not he military one), and 16 tons of fuel the ship is around 810 tons which allows it to hit it's top boost speed of 340 with A thrusters.

I'm currently torn between keeping the PA or giving the Flak Cannon a try both seem to just eat the hulls of the big ships, though the FC does seem to do a good 10-20% more damage if I can get the full spread to hit.
My next upgrade path is going to be a B7 PP, followed by A thrusters, then maxing the shield. (that A rated PP is gonna be awhile to grind :D)

And having not used fixed weaps since my first loaned sidewinder I am having quite a hard time adjusting. I currently use a Logitech 3d proextreme, combo'd with a keyboard controls, is there any recommended software to tweak the joystick? (as the logitech is a plug and play with little to no options for tweaking on its own.) I find myself hitting a very slight deadzone, despite having it set to 0 in game options, which in turn is causing slight over adjustments when trying to get a bead on the smaller ships.
